Looks That Kill! Brawler Morrison Steps Up His Game in 2019

Looks That Kill! Brawler Morrison Steps Up His Game in 2019

Sometimes the path to success takes long roads. Winding, dark, off-the-beaten-path roads. It looks like you've made the proper choice and you're just down another dead end.

For Brawler Morrison, this sums up his career. But that may not be the case much longer.

For 10 years, Morrison has fought to prove that he can be successful in the professional ranks. And along the way, he has looked for an identity to make himself stick out from all the other wrestlers. But for the past couple of years, Morrison has found that just being himself is really all the identity he needs. And it might finally be working for him.

Morrison was always a determined competitor. He never backed down from a challenge, but it always seemed like he could never quit find his niche. From pairing with current BPW Oklahoma Tag Team Champion Sam Stackhouse as the Future Endeavours to donning a mask and being Patient Zero, Morrison struggled to be recognised on his own. He surrounded himself with groups such as The New Era [2nd] and the Clockwork Clique, but even that brough only limited success. He completely reinvented himself as "The Extravagant" Chazz Morrison, but it was obvious this was just a ruse and he was not comfortable with it.

A couple of years ago, when ComPro owner Mike Two sold to Mitch Baxter, Morrison was one of the COMPOUND stars to remain there and it seemed like things finally began to fall into place for him. Going simply by his last name, Morrison adopted a straight-ahead technique. Punches, kicks and chokes, all with a gleeful toothless smile on his face. The more pain he absorbed, the happier he seemed to be. The only problem with this is that it didn't bring him any more success. But that didn't bother Morrison. Because he was finally content in being himself. And he was learning.

Morrison spent most of 2017 and 2018 in ComPro before leaving and making inroads back into WFC and MSWA. MSWA has probably been the most immediately successful venture for him. Morrison holds victories over current MSWA Mid-South and ASP Tag Team Champion Mascara La Parka and Gemini [2nd], but this past Friday, he not only scored a victory over J. J. Hefley, he actually ended a partnership. Morrison attacked Hefley from behind outside the ring and beat on him quite a while. When the match made it into the ring, there was brief rally by Hefley, but it didn't last long and Hefly was soon on the receiving end of a DVD and pinned in the middle of the ring. This made Hefley's manager, C. M. Burnham, so irate that he told Hefley he was on his own now and then stormed out of the ringside area, leaving a broken and distraught Hefley all alone.

Morrison's success in MSWA has not automatically transfered over to WFC, but that may not be too far away. It seemed like Morrison was on the same path in WFC as he had been in ComPro, but then he scored what may be the biggest victory of his career when he upset Bishop Nasty in a match where closed fists were legal, advancing to the semi-finals of the 2019 Ryder Herring Memorial Cup Tournament. While he did not make it to the finals, the moniker of "Brawler" now had paid off. And that second night he came to ringside during J. D.'s WFC Hometown Heroes Title defence against Killbane, signaling a new partnership and challenge to the WFC Tag Team Titles. Morrison and Killbane are both individuals with similar perspectives on wrestling and life and they functioned well together in the 2019 Freedom Rings Rumble while both were in the ring.

Looking at Morrison, he doesn't seem like a stand-out wrestler. He's not particularly jacked. He's not overly attractive. He isn't colourful. By his own admission, he's "an ugly guy with a chip on his shoulder". But looks don't mean success or failure. That's determined by ability. And Brawler Morrison now stands at the threshold of taking the next big step in his career and proving the doubters wrong once and for all.
