What is a King To A God?

What is a King To A God?

Posted: Jul 18th 2019 By: CMBurnham

This past May was supposed to be the end of an era.

For the better part of two months, Luke Langely had done everything necessary to draw Jon Cross out of retirement. A retirement that was forced on him by injury and the culminated with him losing the WFC Championship to Tim Rockwell in a Steel Cage Match. The next day, the famous video of him nailing his boots to the wall was posted and fans were led to believe they would never see Cross compete again.

For the better part of two years, Cross was content to remain a manager to Alex Royal and a member of The Villains. But the match with Langley seems to have lit a fire under Cross. He lost. HE came back and even though he lasted over 45 minutes against a man who regularly competes every weekend, he lost.

So after two years, Jon Cross still has something to prove.

Two weeks ago, Cross was the surprise final entrant in the Sooner Stampede, which he won, earning himself a shot at the UWE Title against Alex Royal. The teacher now stepped forward to challenge the student to one final test.

But even that was not enough for Cross. Because there was one other name whispered in the darkness of his mind. One other individual who, even though he was not present at OKX, still made an incredible statement through Tim Rockwell. And that name was Barrett Brown.

Brown has been tearing up the scene in Texas and the day after Independence Day, won a tournament to be crowned the "King of Texas". A title that he regally displayed, along with two championship belts, when he made his return to WFC in Claremore this past Saturday.

Prior to the event, Brown held a seminar where the outstanding participant would be selected to compete against Brown on the card. And that standout was ASP Champion Johnny Kove. Only two years in the business and he was able to impress someone with the pedigree and awareness of Barrett Brown. So Brown and Kove had a match and, to be fair, there was not really any doubt who was going to win. Kove gave it his best, something Brown acknowledged after the match was over, but Brown's mind wasn't really on this match. Not 100%.

When the match with Kove was over and Kove had given respect to his opponent, he took the microphone and said that even though he was not present at OKX, he still made an impression by sending a text message to Tim. He then officially announced his challenge to Jon Cross, saying that he wanted to give Oklahoma the dream match it deserved. At that point, Cross' music played and Cross came into the ring from behind, trying to catch Brown off guard. But Brown connected with a superkick, knocking Cross down. Brown greeted Cross saying that if Cross was ready, he was prepared to kick Cross' ass. Brown then expressed disappointment in Cross' tactics and attempted to leave, btu Cross wanted Storytime and said that in college he had a professor that said every story fell into one of 10 plots. She was wrong. According to him, he's "Jon Cross, bitch!". Cross then hit Brown with a big boot, catapulting him out of the ring, followed by a plancha onto him on the outside. Brown recovered and hit a Double Stomp from the top rope, then hit a Brainbuster.

That brought Tim Rockwell, as co-DOO of WFC, to the ring to separate the two and calm things down, despite the fans' desire to see them fight. Rockwell said he had been trying to book this match for years and now, at the 8 Year Anniversary show for WFC, they WILL face each other.

Cross does not think of himself as a god. That is a title others have put on him. But the question has validity. What is a king to a god? Brown needs to beat Cross to prove that he is not only the best in Texas, but one of the best in Oklahoma. He also needs to beat Luke Langley and he will have the opportunity to do that at the WFC event on August 17th. As for Cross, in a recent Facebook post, he had the following to say:

"Seriously...I’ve always had mad respect for guys like Luke and Barrett. I view them on a level I personally don’t match...that being said...

If you call my name I will oblige."
