Mid-States Wrestling has been entertaining fans in Northwest Arkansas for 15 years now. On Saturday, June 23rd Mid-States Wrestling returns to action at the Youth Center in Harrison and it is their annual “Legends of Wrestling” event. Among the legends scheduled include Tennessee wrestling icons Jerry “The King” Lawler and “Superstar” Bill Dundee.
Lawler made his professional wrestling debut in 1970. He has held over 150 titles in his illustrious career, including holding the American Wrestling Association World Heavyweight Title for over 8 months in 1988. One of his greatest feuds was against actor Andy Kaufman in 1982. Kaufman at the time was wrestling women and calling himself the Intergender Champion of the World. The feud caught the eye of mainstream press which led to Lawler and Kaufman appearing on “Late Night with David Letterman” where Lawler slapped Kaufman across the face. Kaufman returned after the commercial break and threw coffee in Lawler’s face. Lawler played himself in the Kaufman biopic film “Man In the Moon”, with Jim Carrey playing Kaufman. Lawler joined World Wrestling Entertainment in 1992, first as an active competitor then as commentator starting in 2001. He is currently under a Legends contract with WWE and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2017. On June 23rd, Lawler will face former NWA World Tag Team Champion “Loverboy” Matt Riviera, with his manager Boyd Bradford.
“Superstar” Bill Dundee, a native of Australia, began in wrestling in 1962 in his homeland after he left home to join the circus at the age of 16. The majority of his career has been spent in Memphis and the surrounding area both feuding and partnering at different times with Jerry Lawler. Dundee has won over 60 titles in his career including the United States Wrestling Association World Heavyweight Title in 1995 and also holding that company’s World Tag Team Titles on three different occasions. Outside of Memphis, Mid-South Wrestling was one of the wrestling companies he worked for. While in Mid-South, he held their Television Title. He also was known as Sir William, the butler for Lord Steven Regal in World Championship Wrestling in the early 1990s. He is still active in wrestling aside from promoting wrestling and MMA fighting and working as a Marketing Director for Cole Brothers Circus.
