Oklafan extend condolence to the family and friends of Paul Jones, who was found dead at his home on April 18, 2018 at the age of 75. Jones, whose real name was Paul Frederik, competed as a Golden Gloves boxer in his youth, winning the Texas Light Heavyweight and Texas Heavyweight titles in that sport. After training under Paul Boesch and Morris Siegel, Jones debuted in 1961 and would spend much of the 1960s moving around various territories. He was given the nickname "Young" to differentiate him from the Paul Jones who competed in the 1940s & '50s. Jones made his first venture into Oklahoma in 1963, debuting on July 8, 1963 in a draw against Antone Leone. He would work opening and lower card matches until May, 25, 1964, when he left to compete in Australia under the name "Al Fredericks". After returning to the United States and once again adopting the name "Paul Jones", he competed in the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia areas before once again returning to Oklahoma. He competed for approximately 6 months in TSW and this time was a much more prominently featured competitor, often tagging with Gorgeous George, Jr., Jesse James, or Haystacks Calhoun to challenge teams such as The Executioners, The Assassins, The Masked Diablos, or then TSW United States Tag Team Champions Chati Yokouchi & Togo Shikuma. Jones departed TSW towards the end of 1967 and made his way to Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling, where he really began to hit his stride, forming a tag team with Nelson Royal. In 1972, Jones entered Florida and for the first time became a heel, adopting the nickname best known to him "Number One". He spent 3 years there and became the first person to hold the Florida Heavyweight, Southern, and Florida Brass Knuckles Titles simultaneously in June of 1972. In 1974, Jones returned to the Mid-Atlantic area, racking up more titles, this time on his own. But by 1975, he was tagging with Ricky Steamboat, a partnership that would last 4 years and bring him 3 Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Titles and 1 NWA World Tag Team Title. That partnership ended in 1979 when Jones turned on Steamboat in a Battle Royal and Jones would remain a heel for most of the rest of his career, teaming with hated former enemies such as Baron Von Raschke and The Masked Superstar and winning the NWA World Tag Team Titles with both of them. His one return to the fans' side was upon his return to Florida, where he donned a mask and competed as "Mr. Florida", a reformed heel who was ashamed to show his face to the crowd. He would be unmasked after Oliver Humperdink stuck a cigar in his eye and Super Destroyer ripped his mask off. Ironically, 2 years later, towards the end of his career, Jones would be managed by Humperdink, who guided him to the Mid-Atlantic Title, which he traded with Jack Brisco in 1982. Jones would then return to Oklahoma for one last run, competing on 7 cards between January and March of that year and challenging Jimmy Snuka for the TSW Tri-States Title as well as Ric Flair for the NWA World Title on the last TSW card in Oklahoma. At that point, Jones switched from wrestling to managing, assembling his "Army" to challenge many of the talents in the Carolinas area. His biggest opponent was Jimmy Valiant and the war between them seemingly lasted for the entire second half of the 1980s. He also guided The Powers of Pain (The Warlord & The Barbarian) in a feud against The Road Warriors (Hawk & Animal) before both teams departed for the WWF. Jones left the NWA in 1989 and competed for Tri-State Wrestling in Pennsylvania as well as South Atlantic Pro Wrestling in 1990, briefly holding the SAPW Championship, his last title. He retired in 1991, opening an auto body shop in North Carolina that year. In all, Jones competed in over 40 documented matches in Oklahoma between 1963 and 1982 and won over 23 championships in his career.

Steven Johnson of SLAM! Wrestling wrote a story entitled ""No. 1" Paul Jones was a beloved hero, hated heel" which you can read by clicking here,
