Judge rules in favor of Jerry "The King" Lawler in assault case

Posted: Aug 1st 2007 By: mikeiles

A face-off fit for the wrestling ring ended in a Mid-South courtroom Wednesday. In one corner was Jerry "The King" Lawler. In the other corner-- Sal "The Big Cheese" Corrente.

There were a few tense moments as the two wrestlers stood just feet apart in front of a judge giving their testimony.

Corrente filed simple assault charges against Jerry Lawler during a recent wrestling event. The judge found Lawler not guilty.

Corrente, who's known as the "Big Cheese," left a Tunica County courtroom as the "Big Loser". Corrente refused to comment, only saying, "there's my attorney there, see him for any comments."

So, we asked his attorney Wesley Hisaw.

"He's pretty upset about the whole event. I'll be talking to him later this afternoon. He feels like he got the short end of the stick," said Hisaw.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the parking lot Jerry Lawler felt like a "king". He thought the Big Cheese made a stink about nothing.

"I was actually embarrassed wasting the courts time listening to this guy absolutely lie to a judge," said Lawler.

Inside the courtroom, Lawler showed the judge a video of the night in question. It was during a wrestling event at Sam's Town in Tunica in June.

Lawler said Corrente got into an altercation with a fan. In order to divert the attention, Lawler said he approached Corrente and hit him once.

Lawler added, "I punched him. That's the way I punch everybody. I'm in the ring with and apparently Sal thought it was too hard."

Corrente testified Lawler punched him several times, leaving him with cuts, scrapes and a black eye.

Citing reasonable doubt, the judge ruled Lawler was not guilty. Lawler said Sal Corrente's motivation in all of this was money.

Lawler showed us a letter from Corrente's attorney threatening litigation if they didn't settle out of court.

Meanwhile, Corrente now has to decide if he wants to appeal the judge's ruling.
