Woo! Wrestling legend Ric Flair coming to Wing Bowl

Woo! Wrestling legend Ric Flair coming to Wing Bowl

Posted: Dec 14th 2016 By: Rob Tornoe

Ric Flair, the styling, profiling, limousine riding, jet flying, kiss-stealing, wheeling and dealing son of a gun is coming to Wing Bowl.

Sportsradio 94.1 WIP host Angelo Cataldi announced on this Tuesday show that the professional WWE wrestling legend will be a special guest at this year’s Wing Bowl, which will celebrate 25 years of debauchery at the Wells Fargo center in the early morning hours of February 3, 2017.

“I’m excited… I heard there’s like 18-20,000 people and scantily clad wingettes,” Flair chuckled before telling Cataldi he was hoping to hold his own private wingette competition. “I guarantee you one thing - I’m not going to get married to any of them.”

Flair also revealed to Cataldi how his trademark “Woo!” got started.

“Riding down the road drinking Miller Lite one night, listening to Jerry Lee Lewis going goodness gracious great balls of fire, woo!” Flair said. “1974.”

Flair’s attendance comes on the heels of a trend at Flyers games where fans have been shouting the wrestler’s trademark “Woo!” at home games.

Back in November, after getting into a scrum with Calgary Flames rookie Matthew Tkachuk, Flyers forward Travis Konecny let out a trademark Flair “Woo!”.

Since then, the “wooing” has actually become an annoyance to Flyers players and staff, including head coach Dave Haksol, who told the Inquirer's Sam Carchidi, “Let’s hope it’s a short-lived fad.”

"I’ve always liked the Flyers,” Flair said. “I got to meet Bobby Clarke and... Dave Schultz in the old day... Such a rich tradition and Philadelphia is a great sports town.”

Flair isn’t the only high-profile guest that will be in attendance. Cataldi said Grammy Award-winning singer Coolio will perform three of his hits prior to the annual wing eating completion.

Also in attendance will be Veronica Harwood, the Jersey Shore native who was the runner up in the E! reality dating show “Catching Kelce.” Harwood will be judging the "Miss Wing Bowl" competition.

A new wrinkle in this year’s Wing Bowl is a ban on previous winners, including last year’s champion and two-time winner Molly Schuyler.

Instead, Schuyler will compete head-to-head against five-time Wing Bowl champion Bill “El Wingador” Simmons, who was released from prison last year after serving two years of a seven-year sentence for cocaine distribution.

"Everybody falls down. The winners get back up," Simmons told Daily News reporter Jason Nark back in 2013 while still in prison. "I'm gonna get back up and make this right."

“It’s amazing that Wing Bowl is still around 25 years later and has become this big,” said WIP Morning Show co-host Al Morganti, who helped Cataldi put together the first Wing Bowl 25 years ago. “We have a duty to make this one the biggest and the best, so that’s what we’ll do."
