Wrestling group looks for ways to aid community

A new United Wrestling Entertainment champion was recently crowned, and drama is sure to ensue at the next event.
The UWE is a local company that has been entertaining locals and helping support the community since 2009. The UWE was originally affiliated with Sooner Pro Wrestling before later becoming its own independent company. Along with providing family-friendly entertainment, UWE regularly helps organizations in the area raise funds at their shows.
The UWE hosts its shows once a month at the Cherokee Nation Markoma Gym, and this month's show is gearing up to be action-packed. UWE President Brad "Fuel" Eubanks said wrestler Brian Breaker became the UWE champion at least month's show, which will in turn could cause some controversy. The UWE's next show is set for Saturday, July 30, at Markoma Gym. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and bell time is 6 p.m. Admission is $5; ages 3 and under are free, along with veterans, law enforcement and military personnel.
"This next show is kind of the aftermath of one of our most important events of the year," Eubanks said. "Last month, we did our Sooner Stampede, our Royal Rumble. We had 32 wrestlers wrestling and the winner of that, Mr. Nasty, gets to face the the champion in the year's biggest event, which is in September. You've got the former UWE champion, Zakk Sinizter, who wants to take revenge, plus you've got the Sooner Stampede winner, who is the No. 1 contender. So what's going to happen when you get these three guys in the same building?"
Eubanks said the show UWE puts on is a unique entertainment opportunity that doesn't break the bank in the process. Shows staged by the UWE are edgy enough for adults and teens while still maintaining a family-friendly environment.
"We're the only entertainment product out there that, for two-and-a-half hours, the fans are involved," Eubanks said. "You can scream, cheer, you might cry, you'll get happy, sad, maybe angry. Every time someone has come to show that's never been before, they always ask us when the next show is - they always get hooked."
The UWE looks for ways to help out the community. Groups from around the area regularly work the concession stand at shows to help raise funds for various causes.
"This month and last, we actually teamed up with Chili's Tahlequah," Eubanks said. "Every year, they do a big St. Jude campaign and they are going to be running the concessions. Everything they make goes back to St. Jude's so that's really cool for us to be able to help with that. Before, we've teamed up with the Woodall seventh- and eighth-grade classes and they raised money for a class trip. That's one of our favorite things to do."
