Fake Facebook events are a thing, and Tulsans are falling for it

Fake Facebook events are a thing, and Tulsans are falling for it

Fake events are being created and trending on Facebook, and pizza and music lovers in Tulsa are the latest "victims." Or, at least having fun with it.

According to an event page on Facebook created by a host named Boss Campbell, '90s rock band Smash Mouth is scheduled to perform at Joe Momma's pizza on June 22.

A spokesperson for Joe Momma's confirms that the concert is not happening. Joe Momma's pizza isn't even open due to a fire that destroyed the restaurant in June of 2015. Owner and city councilor Blake Ewing is currently in the process of rebuilding, but no word on an official date to reopen.

Still, that didn't stop at least a few on the event page to be confused over whether their favorite pizza joint was going to reopen, or a retro band was making an appearance in Tulsa.

It appears the majority of comments on the page are people having fun with the prank. At one point, even Ewing joined in the fun.

We reached out to the event host. Campbell said he got the idea when he saw a similar fake event for Limp Bizkit in Detroit. "I figure this was good for a laugh while this fad is going, it seems like it's already started to die off," wrote Campbell in a message. "I had no idea mine would spread throughout this area so quickly to people who didn't understand the joke."

According to "People," fake concert pranks on Facebook are part of a nationwide trend. The entertainment magazine reports they have been set up in dozens of cities, including Austin and Nashville. Most of the fake events supposedly take place at small restaurants with bands popular in the 1990s.
