Sting making history fighting for WWE title

Sting making history fighting for WWE title

Posted: Sep 1st 2015 By: Justin LaBar - TribLive.com

Sting, 56, is about to challenge for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship for the first time in his career. Yes, history is being made, but let's not make too much history, especially if not logical.

The WCW legend in a WWE title match is an attraction to some. It's a fresh match with his vintage skill set against one of the most talented and emerging stars in Seth Rollins. The match is another marketable campaign to continue pushing new subscribers to the WWE Network.

For those reasons, I don't mind the match, and I have some excitement to see it. But don't mistake my excitement for false hopes. Sting will not be WWE World Heavyweight Champion. If he is, you'll be able to clock it with an egg timer.

The only purpose Sting would have holding the title is it would be such a ?never thought this would happen moment? and provide more heat on Sheamus when he sneak attacks him to use his Money in the Bank title shot.

Sheamus could cash in if WWE still wants to give him a run with the title. If it is not interested in Sheamus doing that anymore, the company could keep it on Rollins for a little while longer in a great showing as the top heel. Just let Rollins flat out beat Sting. Some fans don't think Sting will start 0-2 in his WWE career. My response is he's 0-1 right now and getting a title shot. Do you really want to embrace records?

Rob Rossi, Trib columnist and fellow wrestling fan, suggested to me the idea of Sting winning the title and holding it going into Survivor Series, which is being held in Atlanta, the home base of WCW where Sting carried the flag until the final day of business. It's a fun idea to talk about in fantasy booking, but that's where it ends.

Survivor Series isn't until November, and I can't see two full months being used with Sting in the world title picture or as title holder. The WCW guy isn't getting a profound win over the WWE guy and especially taking the WWE title for an extended period of time. I said there was no way he would beat Triple H at WrestleMania for that very reason and that proved true. WWE even used its faction in DX to help beat Sting and WCW's faction of the NWO.

The company got all it wanted out of the WWE versus WCW war for the WrestleMania match between Sting and Triple H. Nothing more is needed to play off that angle.

Some of WWE's targeted younger fan base today has never even watched a WCW match or much history of it. To some of them, Sting is a guy with face paint who debuted last November and has one match at WrestleMania. To some of them, WCW is Woman Crush Wednesday and not World Championship Wrestling.

The most logical scenario to me is Sting wining against Rollins and seconds later Sheamus cashing in and taking the title from Sting. I don't see Sheamus as champion in the WrestleMania season, at least not from how things look now. This is a good transition time to give Sheamus a run and see what he does with it. A Rollins loss to Sting also would cause friction between Rollins and his boss. Triple H can brag that he beat Sting while Rollins came up short, which is unacceptable for a guy who wants statues built of him. This conflict eventually results in a match which can lead to Rollins' babyface turn when the time is right.

Sting is in WWE, which is cool to see, but he's there to play a role and do a job. His role is to be the accomplished legend who ultimately does the job to help the talent of today who the company relies on every week.
