Analysing Possibility of Sting Becoming WWE World Heavyweight Champion
Posted: Aug 28th 2015 By: Aaron Bower - BleacherReport.com
WWE was sent into a meltdown on a chaotic post-SummerSlam edition of Raw with a number of twists and surprises.
Although the return of The Dudley Boyz was a major surprise, the shocking return of Sting in the final segment of the show was a far more significant moment for the future of the company's main event.
It wasn't long after Raw finished and Sting took down Rollins that Triple H announced that he wanted the WWE world heavyweight champion to finish what he couldn't do at WrestleMania and put Sting's WWE career to bed not long after it has truly begun.
The match is set, and Rollins will lock horns with The Icon at Night of Champions with the company's biggest prize on the line?a remarkable turn of fortunes for a guy who has wrestled just once with WWE since joining, and that was a defeat to Triple H.
But what are the chances of Sting claiming the world title, either in the next few weeks or in the future?
Night of Champions
Right off the bat, it seems wise and perhaps sensible to insist that Sting doesn't appear to have much of a chance of winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Night of Champions.
Why? Well, as mentioned above, the guy has only really wrestled one match with the company, and although it was an entertaining and frenzied bout with Triple H which included a whole host of run-ins, it wasn't quite a mat masterclass.
To trust Sting to pick up the belt and defend it over the next few months would be a huge risk, especially if you consider he'd be taking it from WWE's most popular heel and one of the best workers in the company.
Whether his schedule allows him to be around for the shows after Night of Champions is another stumbling block that may halt his path to potential success.
Of course, given that he's only been back for one night, it would be unfair to completely rule out the chances of it happening. After all, Sting could prove his worth as a serious world title candidate in the run-up to the match. However, the odds are not in his favour.
So if we're dismissing Night of Champions as a realistic setting for Sting's crowning glory, could the future be any better?
Beyond NoC
The more Sting settles into WWE and performs regularly, the greater his chances of winning the title.
But it's important to remember that he doesn't have time on his side. After all, he is 56 and you feel like if the decision were made to give him the belt, it would have to be done in the next six or seven months.
Could a run with the strap heading towards WrestleMania be a possibility? It could, but it all depends on what a guy like Rollins is doing away from that.
You wouldn't imagine Rollins and Sting fighting for the next few months on a long-term basis, and if Rollins is going to remain as champion beyond Night of Champions, he may have to drop the belt elsewhere for Sting to pick it up.
If Sting is destined to fight Undertaker at WrestleMania at some point, the WWE World Heavyweight Championship wouldn't be on the line. It's a glamour, dream match that doesn't need the world title involved, much like Brock Lesnar vs. Undertaker at WrestleMania.
But Lesnar moved on from that win to have a sustained spell with the title in his possession after going away and coming back with a new target. So again, it's a possibility, but time is not on his side.
However, it would feel like a crime to many wrestling fans if WWE brought Sting in and never once gave him a month with the title.
