Primos Slave to the Deathmatch V Road Report
Posted: Sep 23rd 2014 By: www.coloradoindies.com
I started off my trek to Primos the right way today: I hesitated leaving in the off chance that the Broncos-Seahawks game would get more exciting and the mighty Broncos would topple their adversaries, claiming revenge. When I realized that 5 PM was slowly approaching and the show started at 6, I decided to head out to arrive at the show and hopefully find a good seat.
Club Fuego Fuego is not a great venue and it sits in a pretty seedy neighborhood. The locals in the area likely would not need to come to a venue to see someone being stabbed or hit with objects because somewhere in the local vicinity, this was probably already happening for free so the idea of word of mouth from the venue spreading was unlikely. This venue is also smaller than last year?s venue so it would be a bit more intimate. Intimate and deathmatch wrestling are not a great combination.
When I get to the venue, a lot of the wrestlers are either hanging out on the patio or finishing up the last of the Broncos game as the Broncos managed to come back and tie the game while I drove to the venue. With this, the doors that were scheduled for 5:30 PM had been pushed back and we were able to finish watching the game before the show started.
When doors finally did open, the fans queued up to the ticket taker and immediately flooded the seats, most seating near the ring filled within about 5-10 minutes. While there were odd chairs unfilled, there was a pretty good crowd overall for the event (But not as good as last year?s event). They gave fans about 25 minutes to get situated with the event starting at 6:25 or so. The sound system was horrendous and the sound guys seemingly didn?t do a sound test for the show as the first match did not have any entrance music:
Ruben Steel and JD Horror Vs. Johnny Crash and Zamil
This was a great introduction to deathmatch wrestling and just how small the venue was. This first match was a light tube match and it took less than a few minutes for much of the first row VIP ticket holders to re-think their purchase and take cover in seats a little further back. JD Horror threw Zamil into all of the chairs in the rows in front of me and I spent the majority of this match watching everyone in front of me re-build the seating area but did catch some of the action with a few light tube breaks (With many tube shards making their way towards the crowd) with Ruben Steel and JD Horror getting the win.
Joey Terrofyin? and Dalton Bragg Vs. Romeo and Shadow Xtreme
This was actually a pretty fun match. It was a kitchen sink match that included large baking sheets that were used the majority of the match. Last year Shadow and Romeo were partners as well but things didn?t mesh well as Shadow seemed a bit timid and there was no chemistry but this year they both brought their a-game. My favorite spot of the match was Dalton running to do a 619 onto Shadow and Romeo completely blindsiding Dalton with a cookie sheet and you could tell Dalton had absolutely no idea that it was coming and was completely caught off guard. Dalton and Joey end up winning and have a bit of a staredown to hype their round two match.
Brute 66 Vs. Outrage and Vago Estrada
This was a pretty brutal match for exactly one spot as overall it was a throwaway to advance Brute 66 into the next round. Outrage came out with a fire breathing gimmick that got some ooh?s and aah?s but wasn?t pulled off well in my opinion as it seemed more like a ?look what I can do? rather than being part of any sort of gimmick. Mosh Pit Mike and Ray Basura spent the majority of the match beating up Vago and Outrage, Outrage finished the match with one of the members of Brute 66 jamming a handful of barbecue skewers into his head which was a pretty gruesome sight but overall this match was what it was.
Battle Royal: Caleb Crush, Trajan Ender, Lonnie Valdez, DarSean Kelley, Danny Troy, Guz, Rocky Penasco Jr., Chris Wrath, Bruce Rogers, Jason Noel, and JT Stanton
It was just funny to see how stacked this battle royal was with some of the best wrestlers in the region taking part in it. This was a battle royal, guys tried eliminating each other and there were some good spots as Trajan and Caleb Crush in particular made it entertaining with their antics and some spots with Lonnie and Wrath. Lonnie and Wrath ignited what looks like Wrath?s next feud and this spot was just designed to make Lonnie look like a million dollars as his attitude and demeanor in trying to take out the champ showed why he is one of the best if not the best wrestler in Colorado. Valdez and Wrath eliminated each other and then Guz and Penasco fought until Guz was able to eliminate Penasco.
Guz and Big Rig Rodge Vs. Chuey Martinez and Manimal
I?m guessing Rodge is a substitution for Khan Kussion. No announcement was made that Khan wasn?t going to be there and some fans did mention being disappointed that he was not there. This match was pretty good though as Rodge just looks imposing and he and Chuey had some great interaction with each other. Manimal is just such a funny gimmick, something you don?t see in deathmatches at all as he did a great job of mixing hardcore wrestling with character development. The crowd enjoyed this match and Chuey and Manimal both came out of it looking really good.
Mosh Pit Mike Vs. Ray Basura
This match had a lot to live up to considering that the last time they had a deathmatch they started a riot. It was a good match but nothing really stood out too much from it. Mosh wins and the two shake hands at the end.
JD Horror Vs. Ruben Steel
This match was awesome and these two guys beat the piss out of each other. While everyone loves watching some guy get hit with some random object, this match turned that upside down and we got to see a good old Strong Style match. The strikes in this match were brutally stiff and shocked the crowd just as much as some of the deathmatch stuff did. Ruben has been good in his Slave outings the last few years but this match with JD Horror put him on a whole new level and made both guys come out of this match looking awesome. I went into this match assuming JD Horror was going to win but so many spots made me think they were going to pull the trigger on Ruben in the finals. Horror ends up taking the win though to advance to the finals.
Chuey Martinez Vs. Manimal
This match harkened back to the original days of ECW with the stipulation being that it was a Tai Pei Death Match. For people who do not know, this type of match means each competitor tapes up their fists and dips them into honey and glass shards. Considering the two combatants, this one was pretty brutal with both guys wailing on each other and raking their glass shard-covered hands against the other?s face. Chuey ended up with the win but Manimal was hands down one of the most over guys of the night with his character so he could definitely be considered an MVP of the show.
Dalton Bragg Vs. Joey Terrofyin
Remember when I mentioned that Dalton would likely do something crazy to try and kill himself? Well he and Joey certainly lived up to that hype. Neither one was too bloody from their previous match so the ?Things That Sting? stipulation really didn?t make sense until a trash can lid full of thumbtacks was set in the ring. This match included Dalton having his forehead split wide open and having hot sauce dumped into the wound and then being hung upside down in the Tree of Woe and having salt dumped from a container onto the wound as well. But if that wasn?t hardcore enough, Dalton loaded Joey?s mouth full of thumbtacks and then gave him the Sole Food yet couldn?t finish him. Joey ended up winning and advancing to the finals but the two of these guys definitely had the tournament match of the night.
303 Title Match: Tony Ortega Vs. Aaron Alexander Vs. Lo Rider
And remember when I mentioned that this would steal the show? Aaron Alexander and Tony Ortega went down to Mexico and came back with a style that is unlike anyone else in Colorado. They have a certain quickness and crispness in their moves and spots that makes all of their matches, and the ones against each other in particular, works of beauty. This match was amazing and the addition of someone as awesome as Lo Rider made it that much better. I am working on putting together a Colorado matches compilation and this one is definitely on that list of matches to include. Ortega beat Alexander after Teila hit Lo Rider with an awesome top rope hurricanrana (An amazing spot, picture perfect) and Ortega did a variation of the Code Red to take Alexander out.
Primos Unified Tag Titles: Canadian Dogs Vs. Canadian Pitbulls Vs. The Upgrades Vs. Mercury Yaden and Sam Udell
There was a lot of talent in this ring, like, seriously a lot of talent. I can not put over just how much the Upgrades only a few months into their career went in and stood toe-to-toe with some of the best wrestlers in not only the state but the entire region. Royce Isaacs had a breakout moment right here making Sam Udell and DH Smith, two bona fide superstars, his equals in the ring. You know what I mean, when a company books a big name to work a random guy on the card and the match is good but you can tell the guy was out of their league? This was not that at all as Royce Isaacs looked like he absolutely belonged in there with these guys. This isn?t to take anything away from the Pitbulls or Cody Devine but Royce Isaacs for someone who has been training a relatively short amount of time looked amazing in this match. I also really enjoyed the intensity I saw from Arik Angel in this match, everyone jokes about how many characters he has been in the past few years but his intensity and Elias? technical abilities really made them stand out. Canadian Dogs won when DH powerbombed Graeme through the Pitbulls through the table to become the Unified Tag Champs. Those Primos tag belts seem to be cursed as the first iteration disappeared with one of its tag champs and one of the current iteration nearly got destroyed in a car accident while the other one was taken to Oklahoma and just recently returned so I really hope these belts are still defended in Denver and not taken back to Primos Wrestling Canada to disappear forever.
Rob Ryzin Vs. Rikishi
My favorite quote from the day was Rikishi saying ?Man, is that glass and light tubes in the ring? I?m barefoot bruddah!? Primos learned from last year?s debacle with Sabu and decided to put the feature matches in between the quarter finals and finals and removing the top mat that was full of thumbtacks and pieces of glass and light tube so that the non-hardcore competitors wouldn?t have to wrestle in it. This was a fun match with a different style and pace than all others. Rob Ryzin is masterful at the way he can make a match entertaining without having to rely solely on highspots and a lot of technical moves because, as Rikishi is getting on in years, a five-star classic likely wasn?t going to be had here. Ryzin did a great job of selling for big ?Kish and building up perfectly to the Stinkface. Rikishi won with his sit out butt splash but this is another prime example of just how entertaining Rob Ryzin can be.
After the match Rikishi tried to cut a promo but the sound system, as it had most of the night, continued to crap out and noticeably annoyed him but he powered through it and ended up dancing with little Scotty McLuvin to the excitement of the crowd. Really entertaining stuff and Rikishi was so nice and such a great guy to the wrestlers and the fans.
STTDM Finals: Mosh Pit Mike Vs. Joey Terrofyin Vs. Chuey Martinez Vs. JD Horror
This was the finals I was expecting although Dalton Bragg was someone I would have expected in there and could have been swapped out as a top pick with any one of these guys. This match was everything you would expect from these guys, blood, guts, and gore. They moved a section of fans out of the way and, as expected, a few drunken idiots tried to refuse to leave the area but eventually complied. I wouldn?t have minded seeing them stay and deal with the consequences of flying thumbtacks and pieces of light tubes but it is what it is. These guys completely decimated each other, getting hit with tubes, Mosh getting thrown into a pyramid of chairs that he set up, and Chuey putting Joey through a table full of tacks and light tubes with a Death Valley Driver. Joey Terrofyin won the match by pinning Chuey in the middle of the ring after throwing a fireball in his face and afterwards he held the trophy high and received praise from former champion Chuey to the crowds approvial.
Overall
This was a very good show but it will be interesting to see where everything goes from here. Lonnie Valdez and Chris Wrath is expected to run on top and I really see Lonnie taking the title off the longest reigning champ in Colorado and eventually feud with DarSean Kelley or Trajan Ender, two feuds that are just dying to take the fans money. The tag titles will be interesting as I mentioned they are now held by the Canadian Dogs who I am not sure how much they will be brought in but if they are going to continue to be used on a monthly basis, The Upgrades and Canadian Pitbulls will likely continue to feud with the winners coming back for the titles. And the 303 title continues to be the workhorse title as Tony Ortega is untouchable right now in just how good he is and should continue defending against Aaron Alexander and insert name here for the rest of time because that is a group I will never get sick of.
But one of the issues that you run into with this show is that the fans are exposed to guys like Manimal, Brute 66, Rocky Penasco Jr., Chuey Martinez, JD Horror, and Ruben Steel and do not see them for another year, if Primos wants to continue with the momentum, they should rotate all of these guys into the shows and include them into the storylines, Brute 66 would be a great team to add into the Tag Division, Penasco would be a great third in the 303 matches, and Chuey, JD Horror and Ruben Steel can have great matches with everyone. Trajan Ender has ran out of guys (aside from Lonnie Valdez obviously) so rotating some of these guys in would give him something to do before being inserted into the title picture. Next month?s show will set a whole new set of storylines into motion, we will see how it plays out.
