Compound Varsity Bring Their "A" Game
Posted: May 9th 2007 By: CMBurnham
They've been friends for a long time. They've tagged together frequently. They are one of the most dominant factions in Northeastern Oklahoma. Yet, they never could claim tag team gold until Saturday when Compound Varsity members Romero Contreras & NWA-U X Division Champion Justin Lee became the 1st FCW Tag Team Champions.
Romero & Justin, along with NWA Universal Champion Rocco Valentino, formed the Varsity late last year to combat the invading forces of the P.I.N.K. Nation. And those battles were quite sucessful. They've also combatted Sudden Impact & Anthony Jackson as well as the briefly reunited forces of New Canada. And while they've brought singles gold home, they'd never been able to dethrone ComPro Tag Team Champions Texas, Inc. or NWA Universal Tag Team Champions Mass Destruction.
Nonetheless, the Varsity was one of the top seeds to fill the vacant FCW Tag Team Titles and Romero & Justin decided that the best way to warm up for a match against members of ICF was to take on...members of ICF. After the last ComPro show, Boss Campbell & Cast-Iron Cothern had fired X-Cal in the ring after he was defeated by one of the Sudden Impact twins. When Cothern & Campbell came to the ring Saturday, they brought El Super Colibri with them, dressed in an ICF T-shirt. Oddly, they spent the entire match referring to him as "X-Cal 2" and it seemed almost like an initiation was going on, complete with hazing. Romero & Justin, while certainly always out to have fun, wanted to prove a point and prepare for later that evening and, knowing that Colibri was the least experienced member of the team, they focused on him. This tactic worked for a while, but ICF got the upper hand on Justin and Cothern delivered a beating until Justin turned an attempted power-bomb into a hurancanrana and tagged in Romero. "The Dark Match Main Event" made a quick disposal of Cothern and gave Colibri the Kool-Aid Krunch, gaining a win for the Varsity and ending Colibri's hopes of joining ICF.
With the warm-up out of the way, the Varsity headed down to Muskogee for the FCW show and prepared to face off against a different combination of ICF members. Shane Morbid unveiled the latest acquisition to the group in the form of Volar. While El Super Colibri is relatively new, he has had a handful of matches around Oklahoma and information about him could be scouted. Volar, on the other hand, was a complete unknown. But this didn't daunt the Varsity as they went out determined to bring home the gold. Romero got iside Shane's head by making fun of his polka-dotted underwear, which were visable under his tights. He also entertained some of the women at ringside only the way the "Compound Franchise" can. And even though they knew nothing about 1 of their opponents, their teamwork and determination prevailed and The Varsity were able to raise the FCW Tag Team belts high above their heads as the show ended.
All 3 members of the Varsity now have gold around their waists, but that may only be for a short while. Rocco Valentino is scheduled to face his cousin Brent Albright on May 19 for the NWA Universal Title. And Justin will probably defend his newly regained NWA-U X Division Title against one of the many contenders on the same show.
For now, the Compound Varsity sit on top of one of the tag team mountains in Oklahoma, but is it enough? Texas, Inc. hold tag team titles in 2 federations. Might the Varsity be interested in bringing their "A" game elsewhere in the state and join Timothy J. Rockwell & Bernard Funk as dual champions? Or might this finally be the time for the Varsity to upend Texas for 1 (or both) of those tag team titles?
