Striking Gold! New WFC Champion Overcomes One Last Hurdle For Title
Posted: Jun 1st 2014 By: CMBurnham
The story is one that many people connected to Oklahoma wrestling have heard.
One year ago, Striker was involved in an horrific accident, being blown off his lawn mower. It was considered by many a miracle for him to have survived.
Prior to that, Striker as diagnosed with kidney cancer, but he also fought past that and recovered.
And prior to that, in 2009, Striker underwent facial reconstructive surgery and had to leave wrestling. He had been told that if he were to compete in the ring again and receive a blow to his face, it could be fatal. Obviously, that did not preclude him from being involved either.
So is it any surprise that Striker finally did what no one else could do on May 18 and defeated Robert Lee for the WFC Hometown Heroes Title?
If it is, familiarity with Striker is obviously something that is lacking.
Of course, just because Striker overcame all those odds does not mean that it was going to be easy for him to be champion. But this was what Striker had wanted for 8 months: A one-on-one opportunity against Mr. Nasty. Striker held 2 tag team victories over Lee and partners of his choosing, but could never corner the champion individually.
And, of course, it did not help that Lee's manager, Stevie Caballero, was the host of the event and had already exercised his ability to essentially do whatever he wanted to earlier in the card, resulting in UWE Champion Tim Rockwell being handcuffed to the ring post and losing to Braxx by countout. If this was any indication of the circumstances Striker would have to deal with, it seemed quite unlikely that he would end up with the title.
But the determination that Striker displayed so often in his life carried over to this match as well and Striker was not going to go down without a fit. Even the unexpected appearance of his son Maddox Jones did nothing to deter Striker from his goal. Maddox as well as the other members of the Caballero Cartel all attempted to make certain that Lee retained the title. but with help from several other members of the locker room, those forces were deterred. And when Rockwell came crashing down on all the wrestlers on the outside after coming off the corner post, it just left Lee and Striker alone in the ring. One Stroke later, Striker had obtained what may be the most precious championship he ever won.
Striker's daughter AnnaLynn Storm and future son-in-law Damon Windsor were in attendance to witness this victory and Striker shared his gratitude with the crowd. Two weeks later, Striker was once again victorious over Lee in the title rematch and then picked up a victory over Lee once again in a 6-man tag team match. Striker appears to have made it clear that he has Lee's number. But there are other challengers out there for Striker to look forward to.
One can be assured that he will face them with all the determination he used to become champion.
