Wrestling Flourishes In The South Bronx
Posted: Apr 7th 2014 By: Antwan Lewis
Robert Munoz's day job is a correction officer at Rikers Island. But once he's in this gym in the South Bronx he becomes "Submission Technician" Bobby Venom.
Bobby Venom, The Caveman and Johnny Nos are wrestlers with the BWF, the Bronx Wrestling Federation. On the first Saturday of each month, the BWF holds matches inside Daro's Extreme Fitness. And they're bringing in New Yorkers by the droves.
Bronco Internationale founded the BWF four years ago. A native of the Dominican Republic, he speaks very little English. But when he is in the ring he communicates very well demonstrating his skills and mentoring younger wrestlers.
The action is hardcore, as are the injuries.
And for the guys, theirs hearts are not only in the ring, but outside it as well. They routinely visit children in New York area hospitals to entertain, to comfort, to inspire.
The next match is April 5, 2014, at Daro's gym.
