Report: Piper Pitches Dream Tag Match for WrestleMania XXX
Posted: Jan 11th 2014 By: mikeiles
For the last several decades, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper has been entertaining wrestling fans with a unique blend of wit and hot-tempered mischief.
Indeed, the "Hot Rod" has tussled with all-time greats such as Jimmy Snuka, Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair and Bret Hart, to name a few.
Despite never having been a world champion, Piper has always been regarded as an upper-echelon legend who stood his obstinate ground, on "Piper's Pit" or otherwise, often getting the last word in on his detractors.
When the legends of past eras were spotlighted this past Monday on Raw, Roddy was again featured prominently, this time in a compelling back and forth with the dissenting triumvirate known as The Shield.
And yet, even when Raw goes back to "normal" on January 13, Piper's presence may actually increase in frequency, en route to WrestleMania 30.
The reason being is that, according to Dave Meltzer's subscribers-only Wrestling Observer Newsletter (via Gerweck.net), Piper is pitching a tag match at WrestleMania 30 that would be both a callback to the very first event and highlight two of WWE's biggest stars of the present:
There continues to be internal discussion regarding a possible Hulk Hogan involvement at Wrestlemania 30.?Rowdy? Roddy Piper has pushed for an idea of a Hulk Hogan and Johh Cena vs. Piper and CM Punk Wrestlemania match.
However, the company does not believe Hogan could pass a physical.
If the proposed tag bout does come to fruition, it would be interesting to see the roles that the 59-year-old Piper and 60-year-old Hogan would play in the match. Certainly, because of age and accrued injuries over the years, their participation would have to be very limited, leaving the bulk of the match to Cena and Punk.
While many fans may object to the two revered grapplers, no matter their legendary status, being heavily promoted for a near-top-of-the-card match at WrestleMania, it would make sense in the grand scheme of things.
Ultimately, WrestleMania 30 will not only be the biggest extravaganza of 2014, but a celebration reflecting back on 30 years of the brand's storied history. In analogous terms, Cena is to Punk what Piper was to Hogan 30 years ago.
Thus, there is no better match that would cover as much history.
