Wrestling By The Numbers: Gene ?Cousin Luke? Petit

The professional wrestling world is sadden by the news of the death of former 2-Time NWA Central States Champion Gene Petit. The Humphreys County Mississippi native who was believed be in his mid-60's passed away on September 29th after health problems spanning the past decade. Petit was suffering from both multiple sclerosis, diabetes and serious back issues, he had been living at a long-term care facility at the time of his death. Gene Petit was a 27-year veteran of the squared circle who first debuted back in 1973 after having been trained by Olympic wrestler Dale Lewis. Petit met Lewis while playing football in college for the University Of Tampa. Over his career he was most well known as both Cousin Luke and Gene Lewis but also competed as The Mongol, Texas Red, Bloody Ox Brody and Kharma.

Gene Petit?s first professional matches were for shows promoted by his trainer Dale Lewis. He would go on to compete regularly for Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling from the mid-1970's to early 1980's. He also spent time in Championship Wrestling From Florida, the Universal Wrestling Federation, Pacific Northwest Wrestling, Maple Leaf Wrestling, NWA Central States, NWA St. Louis and Georgia Championship Wrestling. In 1975 he wrestled in a tour with New Japan Pro Wrestling and returned to the orient in 1983 and 1987 with rival promotion All Japan Pro Wrestling. Petit signed with World Wrestling Entertainment in 1985 and spent a year with the organization. After leaving the WWE in 1987 he went on to wrestle mostly for Northeast independent promotions. He was also on the Board Of Directors with the Professional Wrestling Hall Of Fame.
