Fury Perseveres To Pick Up Win At Cancer Benefit Show

Posted: Jul 26th 2013 By: CMBurnham

Some people do things because they earn compensation for them. Others, because it gives them some sense of accomplishment or superiority.

And then there are people who do things just because it's the right thing to do.

Christopher Fury prides himself on being a "Bad Bad Man". Much like UWE United States Champion Tim Rockwell prides himself on being "The Natural Born Villain". But both men have one thing which will seemingly soften their hearts: cancer. Rockwell has made it a personal goal to bring greater awareness to childhood cancer. Fury's family was touched by cancer. So both men are perfectly willing to put aside their typical behaviour to fight for a greater cause.

And that is what Jon Cross calls "hypocrisy".

Cross interrupted Rockwell at the beginning of the most recent WFC event in Owasso and proclaimed him the "Great Deceiver". He said that Rockwell believes that doing these charity shows once or twice a year will absolve him of all the sins he commits during the rest of the year. Cross and Rockwell, long-time enemies, were set to face off against each other in a 6-man elimination match in the main event of this show and both men had chosen to reveal their partners for that event in the ring. In addition to his manager, Stevie Caballero, Cross would be partnering with Dutch Hagen and UWE Tag Team Champion Robert Lee. Rockwell said that Christopher Fury would be on his side, but left the third slot open, saying that the winner of the "Rumble For A Cause" Battle Royale would fill that slot.

That Battle Royale opened the show and presented an interesting contrast. Two of the final four were Rolling Thunder & Malice, both veterans, but both also unlikely to coooperate with Rockwell and Fury in their match. The other two, X-Statik and OWA Junior Heavyweight Champion Michael Wolf, were more akin to partner with Rockwell & Fury, but also smaller in size and lesser in experience. Wolf was the first of them eliminated, being viciously dumped over the top and landing face-first on a ringside table. Malice & Thunder then appeared to have things easily handled, but began to argue over who would dump X-Statik over the top. This allowed X-Statik to lowbridge Thunder and then, after a brief struggle, hurancanrana Malice to the ground to pick up the win.

C. M. Burnham attempted to get an interview with X-Statik after the match, but before the victorious youngster could utter any words, Cross and his associates hit the ring and brutatlised X-Statik, putting him into a vicious Dutch Oven that left X-Statik motionless on the floor. Rockwell, Fury and others made their way to the ring, but it was almost too late and X-Statik had to be helped from the ring.

Prior to the main event, video came from backstage showing Rockwell emerging from the dressing area. Fury asked him about the condition of X-Statik, but Rockwell confirmed he would be in no condition to compete that night. Rockwell did have a plan, though, and headed off to make a phone call.

So the time came for the main event to begin. Team Cross arrived in full force, ready and prepared to take on their challengers. Rockwell & Fury arrived and Team Cross immediately began to question whether they had anyone else on their side. Ring announcer Mike Iles inquired as to whether this would end up being a Handicap match, but Rockwell said he had a third partner: a former host for WFC and the man who trained him, Dexter Hardaway! With that, the elimination match was one. It almost became an imprompty 8-man match when Stevie Caballero attempted to inject himself into the match and take on referee Stevie Jay. But after Caballero figured out his place was not in the ring, things settled down.

The match did not start off the way Rockwell wanted, as he would be the first person eliminated after a powerbomb by Jon Cross, who then pinned him with his feet on the ropes. Rockwell was visually upset at not being able to continue on and help the team with his name, but took a seat in the back row to watch the outcome.

Dexter Hardaway gained a little revenge for Rockwell by eliminating Cross after a leaping RKO. And things got even better after that as Stevie Caballero was ejected for trying to interfere in the match.

A near accident by Christopher Fury put the match in jeopardy for his team as he accidentally knocked the referee unconscious. Hardaway hit a hurancanrana on Robert Lee, but by the time a replacement ref could make it to the ring, Hardaway could only get a two count. Lee then connected with the Pimp Slap and eliminated Hardaway.

So it came down to Fury by himself against Lee and Dutch Hagen. Fury quicky superkicked Lee to eliminate him, but then had to handle Dutch Hagen on his own. Hagen immediately began to focus on Fury's knee, making it impossible for Fury to pick Hagen up and execute Down Goes Frazier. Fury was able to muster enough strength to superkick Hagen to the outside and then dive through the ropes and crash on to him. But as Hagen reentered the ring, Cross slipped out from the back area and tripped Fury while he attempted to get back in the ring. This brought Rockwell back to ringside and he and Cross battled tooth and nail around the ring and to the back area. All the while, Hagen was stalking Fury, setting him up for the Dutch Oven. But in the surprise move of the night, Fury was able to reverse the Dutch Oven into an Impaler DDT and take Hagen out, winning the match for Team Rockwell.

It was a tremendous victory for the three-some, but all of them will have their hands full on September 8th in Skiatook, as WFC host Jason Jones (on behalf of Zane Morris, the host of the next event) announced 3 one-on-one events for that show: Dexter Hardaway vs. Robert Lee, Dutch Hagen vs. Christopher Fury and, for the last time ever, Tim Rockwell vs. Jonathon Cross.
