Obsession Drives Morbid Through Repeated Confrontations With Hagen

Posted: May 23rd 2013 By: CMBurnham

There is a line of thought that suggests wrestlers never truly retire.

Bar some unfortunate injury, many wrestlers cannot resist having 'one last run'. They miss the roar of the crowd. They want the adulation of the masses.

And then there are a select few who come back because there is one thing they never accomplished. And they need to achieve that last goal before walking away.

Shane Morbid could easily have left wrestling forever in 2011. His resume spoke for itself. A highly respected veteran, Morbid had carved quite a name for himself in his 10 years in the sport. A Triple Crown Champion. Achieving the #1 ranking in the Oklafan Top 50. Voted both Wrestler of the Year AND Tag Team of the Year (with Cast-Iron Cothern) in the same year. Morbid had done it all.

Except defeat Dutch Hagen.

And that truly tore at Morbid's guts. Hagen was the man to defeat Morbid for the ComPro Title. Even worse, Morbid never received a rematch for the belt before Hagen lost it to current UWE United States Champion Tim Rockwell.

So Morbid went away. And stayed away. And all the time he was gone, the desire to best Hagen gnawed at him until finally he could resist it no more.

So Morbid contacted ComPro commissioner Mike Iles and made his return as the surprise entrant in the 6-Pack Challenge event at ComPro's November event. But again, revenge was denied to Morbid as Brian Lakewood eliminated Hagen from the match.

Morbid hoped a new year would bring him the victory he wanted, but again, the fates had other ideas. At the February show, as Morbid went for a slingshot suplex, Richard Pierce grabbed Morbid's feet, causing him to fall and be unable to kick out. Morbid took some revenge out on Pierce, even threatening to break his golf clubs, but it wasn't the same. It wasn't a victory over Hagen.

In May, Morbid had another 1-on-1 confrontation. And again, Richard Pierce featured in the outcome. Pierce distracted the referee and threw the bell hammer into the ring. Hagen then feigned an injury and when Pierce turned the referee around, he saw Morbid with the weapon and called for a DQ. Pierce had become more and more prominent in ensuring that Morbid could not defeat Hagen. But Morbid had a plan.

Morbid arranged for a tag team match at the OWA event on May 11. Hagen and Pierce would tag against Morbid and Midget World Champion Lil G and whoever lost the pinfall would have 30 days to complete their contractual obligations and could never wrestle in the state again. Morbid truly hoped to eliminate Hagen this way, but understood it was a long shot. More focus fell on Pierce and ended up on the receiving end of a tadpole splash from Lil G and was pinned. While the record books show a victory of Morbid's team over Hagen's team, it still was not what Morbid wanted. It still was not one-on-one.

Due to their duplicitous actions at previous events, ComPro commissioner Mike Iles banned Pierce and Hagen from the May 17th event, saying if they showed their faces, they would be fired on the spot. Morbid apparently didn't get that message as he came out at the beginning of the show to call Hagen out. After being reminded of the ban, Morbid had to settle for a main event match against ComPro Champion Michael York. Morbid certainly took a lot of frustration out on York, even referring to him as Hagen on a few occasions. And York was not prepared for this abuse, eventually taking a count-out loss rather than suffer through more physical punishment. But as Morbid celebrated the victory, two hooded men hit the ring. The smaller one stayed outside, but the bigger one (who appeared to be wearing a Dutch Hagen T-Shirt) went in and ambushed Morbid, going so far as to try and give what appeared to be a Dutch Oven to Morbid. Morbid was able to fight away and chase off the masked man, but he was certain who they were. And he vowed to get justice on June 7.

Morbid is focused. He is determined. And he is ready. All he needs is a fair chance, one-on-one and he is sure he can beat Dutch Hagen. After that, the options are open. But until then, Morbid clings to one last unfulfilled goal.
