Martinez Makes Unintentional Donation To Fire Department

Martinez Makes Unintentional Donation To Fire Department

Posted: Apr 6th 2013 By: CMBurnham

It was something of a surprise when Ray Martinez defeated Kid Krazy for the SRPW Title on March 9. Martinez had not been looked at as a leading contender at the time.

It was even more of a surprise when Martinez, together with Luc Lapointe, Tommy Toops and Selena, reformed the P.I.N.K. Nation a couple of weeks later.

But Martinez was on the receiving end of the surprises this past Saturday when SRPW put on a benefit show for the Oakhurst Fire Department (ironically, the former home of rival promotion ComPro). Former SRPW referee Keebler accompanied the chief of the volunteer department, Mike, and came to the ring. Mike explained to the crowd that just 3 months before, the department was almost shut down. But thanks to outside assistance, it lived on. Mike then held up a championship belt which he announced would be up for grabs in a 20-man Battle Royal in the main event. Apparently this was too much for Ray Martinez to take as he and Selena emerged from the back. Martinez proclaimed that there was only 1 belt that mattered in SRPW and it was his. He then proclaimed that if Keebler or Mike won the Battle Royal, he would donate his pay to the Fire Department.

Martinez showed no lack of confidence later in the card when he defended his title against X-Statik. But even in a defence against a smaller and less experienced competitor, Martinez still had to rely on Selena and her loaded pocketbook to gain the win. And after a brief rest, stepped in against 15 other people to try and add another title to his growing collection. And it appeared he would accomplish this goal as he, Keebler, Mike and SRPW Tag Team Champion Bobby Burns were the final 4 in the match. Being the smallest, it wasn't much surprise when Keeber was eliminated by Martinez. The elimination of Burns by Martinez was more of a surprise as he was the largest man in the match. With only the inexperienced Mike left, it seemed sure that Martinez was going home the winner, but Mike surprised everyone with a vicious chop to Martinez and a quick elimination! Overconfidence had reared its ugly head and Martinez was swallowed in its grasp.

Even though he didn't win a new title belt, Martinez is still the SRPW Champion. And with the protection of the P.I.N.K. Nation behind him, it will take some serious effort to wrest it from him.
