Luck Of The Gods? Starr Finally Gains Victory Over Devil

Luck Of The Gods? Starr Finally Gains Victory Over Devil

Posted: Mar 29th 2013 By: CMBurnham

March 17 had the luck of the Irish present for many at the MSWA event in Midwest City. But perhaps the luckiest was Bobby Starr as he was finally able to do the one thing he had never accomplished in the company: gain a clear victory over the Canadian Red Devil.

The Devil even brought that point up, saying that he had defeated Starr on several occasions, but Starr had never beaten him. And that is essentially true as they have had several confrontations in their mutual time in MSWA.

But the stakes increased on October 28 when Starr won the MSWA Oklahoma Title from Cody Jones. The Canadian Red Devil was involved in that match as was Copycat, but it was the Jones' valet, Starr, who proved to be the decisive factor as she low-blowed Jones and allowed Starr to pin him to win the title.

Important to note, though, is that the Devil was not pinned, so technically he didn't lose. And one month later, the Devil brought this point up, challenging Starr to an Oklahoma Title match. Starr agreed to give him a match, but it would be non-title. However, if CRD won, he would earn the title match he wanted. CRD did just that. And that began the months-long campaign of ducking and weaving from Starr as he would do just about anything to avoid having to put that title on the line.

When 2013 began, CRD finally cornered Starr and was able to receive his title opportunity. And it was clear that he had Starr beaten as he dominated the match. So Starr used the brass scepter on him, earning a DQ and retaining the title. Again, he didn't defeat CRD.

At February Fallout, CRD was again granted a title opportunity (since Starr still did not hold an actual victory over him.) And it appeared that Starr might finally have been able to vanquish his foe. The action in the match spilled to the outside as both competitors notched their intensity levels up. There was also a focus on both parties in the crotch-area. As the match went on, once again Starr realised that it didn't seem to be possible for him to defeat CRD, so he went outside the ring and grabbed his title belt, bringing it back into the ring. CRD ducked as Starr attempted to hit him and then took the belt from the champion, giving it to referee George Knight. Starr took advantage of that moment to lock CRD into a Stroke, causing his head to impact onto the belt and knocking the Devil out. Knight could not DQ him since he was the one in possession of the belt at the time and was forced to count the pin. It looked like CRD's title hunt was over. But after the match, MSWA owner Bad Boy came out from the back and said that he had seen what had happened on the monitor and was reversing the decision. Once again, victory was ripped from Starr's hands and CRD remained the #1 contender to the title.

The following show, CRD took the week off. And it proved to be one of the biggest mistakes he could make as Starr came out and claimed to have been victorious over "the Red Scorpion". He thanked the gods for that victory and announced that there were no contender to his title in the back. This brought out Brandon Groom who made it clear that he wanted to represent Oklahoma as its champion and could do a better job. Starr accepted the challenge and it was clearly evident that he was just as outclassed by Groom as he was by CRD. Groom's abilities as a former high-school and collegiate wrestling standout, combined with his experience during appearances with WWE, made him almost no competition for the champion. Groom pulled off a beautiful huracanrana and then executed the Fall From Grace, pinning the champion for 3. A new Oklahoma Champion had been crowned. But where did this leave CRD?

That question was answered at the next show. Groom was not present, buth Starr and CRD were. And both had complaints. Starr demanded that he receive a title rematch and that Groom was a thief, having stolen "his" Oklahoma Title. CRD said that he beat Starr as many as 5 times, but Starr had never beaten him. This in-ring bickering brought out MSWA commissioner Erica, who announced that she had had enough of their "high school girl antics". Since they were both present, she made a #1 contenders match and insisted that they solve their problems like men. Once again, the two combatants squared off. CRD was confident as he knew Starr had never beaten him. Starr was determined because he needed to get the title shot. Things proceded as many of their matches tended to. Starr running and complaining, CRD dominating with mat-based technical moves. This time, though, when Starr caught CRD for the Stroke, he rammed CRD's head into the corner turnbuckle, then pinned him, but CRD's foot was over the rope. The referee caught that and Starr tried to bring the leg back in. It didn't quite make it, but the referee didn't notice and Starr finally gained the victory he had wanted for so long.

So, in an unfortunate twist of fate, CRD is now at the bottom of the contenders' list and Starr will receive another opportunity to reclaim the Oklahoma Title from Brandon Groom. Perhaps it was the luck of the gods. Perhaps it was luck of the Irish. But Starr must consider himself a lucky man for having achieved this opportunity.
