A Hardcore Legacy
Posted: Feb 1st 2013 By: CMBurnham
When SWCW Hardcore & SWCW Tag Team Champion Kareem Sadat defeated Shane Morbid on March 17, 2007 to become the 1st Hardcore Champion, it's unlikely that he was aware of the legacy he was creating for himself.
Over the next 6 years, Sadat would cement himself as the most dominant Hardcore champion in the state, earning the nickname ?The Oklahoma Hardcore Legend? as he would go on to capture that title a record 20 times.
The list of people he has defeated to create this record is very diverse. Damien Morte was the first to upset him, but the title came back to Sadat less than a month later. In total, 12 different people have fallen to Sadat for the belt, including K-Rob, who lost a Loser Leaves SWCW match when he lost the title and was never heard from again; former referee Rob Justice; current acting commisioner L. J. McDaniels and all 3 of Sadat's brothers: David Kyzer, Shane Sanchez & SWCW Tag Team Champion Kevin James Sanchez amongst others.
One of the things that makes the Hardcore title so difficult to hold on to is the 24/7 clause, meaning the title is defended 24 the title is defended 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Damien Morte was the first person to fall victim to this clause, losing the title to Sadat before Sadat dropped it to Kevin James Sanchez. Sadat has captured 7 of his titles under the auspices of that clause, which makes it the most difficult to defend.
The biggest thorn in Sadat's side over the past 6 months has been Rick Russo, himself a 5-time Hardcore Champion. Sadat has beaten Russo for 4 of his Hardcore titles and Russo has won 3 of his from Sadat. This past Saturday saw Sadat forced to defend his title in a 6-man Battle Royal. Sadat was eliminated third and the match came down to Russo and Maniac Mike. Mike was hoping to regain the title for a 4th time, but Russo lowbridged the rope and Mike catapulted over the top, resulting in Russo winning his fifth Hardcore title. Acting commissioner L. J. McDaniels signed a rematch between the two for later that night. Mike came prepared, giving everything he had, but after referee Crazy Charlie was knocked out, Russo pulled a pair of brass knucks he had hidden in his kneepad and knocked Mike out with them before reviving the ref and gaining the pinfall. After the match, Russo went crazy, taking a steel chair and repeatedly delivering blow after blow to both Charlie and Mike before Sadat arrived. Sadat reminded Russo about the 24/7 clause and challenged him to a match. Russo tried to walk away, but McDaniels used his commissioner powers to force the match to happen. And he took away Russo's brass knucks for the match began.
Russo found several other weapons to use during his match, but in the end, it was a stunner from Sadat that put Russo down and allowed Sadat to begin his 20th title reign. SWCW officials have already announced that there will be a celebration of this accomplishment on February 2nd. What nature that celebration will take is still unknown, but it seems unlikely that formal dress will be required.
