Gods, the Devil and Groom

Gods, the Devil and Groom

Posted: Jan 24th 2013 By: CMBurnham

The MSWA Oklahoma title has been the centre of controversy for a few months now, ever since Venus turned on Cody Jones and assisted Bobby Starr in becoming champion.

Starr's most persistant challenger since he won the belt has been BYEW Champion The Canadian Red Devil. CRD has made it well known that he intends to capture MSWA gold before the summer begins. He specifically wants the Oklahoma title because of its roots back to CRD's main fed, ComPro.

Forcing Starr to defend his title has not been easy for CRD, despite earning the #1 contendership by beating Starr in November. Starr was able to duck and avoid CRD for December, but found himself forced to defend due to the 30-day rule at MSWA's first event in 2013. It was obvious very quickly that Starr was not properly prepared for this match and he just wanted to be able to leave with his belt. To that end, he hit CRD with his sceptre, earning a DQ loss, but retaining the title. In a bit of revenge, CRD stole Starr's wig and robe and left with them.

Last Sunday, CRD came to the ring, or perhaps it is more accurate to say CBD, as ring announcer C. M. Burnham announced him as the Canadian BRASS Devil. In full Bobby Starr regalia, CRD came out and proceded to imitate Starr's mannerisms as the crowd laughed uproariously. Eventually, CRD threw Starr's wig to the ground, saying smelled like urine! He reminded everyone that he was still the #1 contender to the Oklahoma title and wanted another title match immediately. But Starr had another trick up his sleeve as he and Venus came out and announced that they had appealed to MSWA commissioner Erica. Erica arrived and agreed that there did not need to be a title match for CRD. Instead, she needed an opponent for Kevin Morgan to tune up with in preparation for his Last Man Standing match with Bad Boy at February Fallout on February 17. CRD was chosen as that opponent and endured a brutal beating over the next few minutes. CRD tried to focus on Morgan's knees, but was no match for Morgan's power game. After receiving the Nuclear Device, CRD was unable to answer the 10 count and Morgan was the winner.

All this thrilled Bobby Starr to no end and he and Venus came out after intermission to address the crowd. Starr told them that "the Gods" had ordained a title defence, but he had no opponent in the back. At that point, the signature music of Brandon Groom hit and The Greco-Roman Oklahoman answered Starr's challenge. After a little back-and-forth arguing, Starr agreed to the match. But again, it was obvious very quickly that Starr was in no way prepared for this. On one occassion, Starr attempted to just walk away from the proceedings, but Groom went out and grabbed him, throwing him back in to take more punishment. Eventually, Starr was able to escape again and this time, Groom did not pursue and Starr was counted out. This was fine with him, but as the champion and his valet attempted to leave the ring area, the Devil showed back up to throw Starr back into Groom's grasp. Groom then hit the Fall From Grace and left Starr laying in the middle of the ring while he and CRD celebrated.

Although they were friends on this occasion, that may not be the case for CRD & Groom come February Fallout. Both men have legitimate claims to deserve a title shot against Starr and it will be interesting to see what commissioner Erica does to resolve this issue.
