Montana Goes Critter Huntin'
Posted: Dec 28th 2012 By: CMBurnham
Terry Montana returned to ComPro recently and immediately set his eyes on the Tag Team Titles. One problem: Picking a partner. It was a long affair that finally culminated on December 15. And the result is one of the most unlikely tag team combinations in ComPro history.
Montana knew he would have to start at the bottom and prove himself in the tag team rankings. So on September 7, he set out to begin is ascension by defeating the Bullies. His partner: Sashimi Deluxe. Not the best choice as Kyle Kelly & Russ Rogers made easy pickings of these two.
Montana chose a different masked man in his next outing, tagging with ComPro Oklahoma X Division Champion Super Skunk Ape, Jr. to take on former ComPro Tag Team Champions Michael York and Ignition. It was a long drawn out match, but again, Montana ended up on the losing side.
This only served to make Montana more motivated and his next choice seemed to be a much better one: Bernard Funk. The Texas Veteran has held tag team gold all over the state, at one point holding the Triple Crown of ComPro, SWCW & NWA-U Tag Team Titles with his nephew Tim Rockwell. Funk & Montana faced prime competition on ComPro Tag Team Champions The Swamp Men. Clearly the combined experience factor was in Montana & Funk's favour. Montana simply approached the match as if he were out in the Black Hills, hunting possum. And it worked! Montana won the match for his team with a devastating elbow drop. And by defeating the tag team champions in a non-title match, it guaranteed them a title shot at the next show.
That was the 6th anniversary event for ComPro on November 17 and it seemed like a title change was in the air. It wouldn't end up being the tag team titles, though. After Amphibian suplexed Bernard Funk, Reptile held Funk's leg from outside the ring to get a cheap win. Once again, Montana had come so close, yet so far away.
That brought Montana to December 15, and once again Montana searched the locker room for a partner. The Swamp Men had issued an open contract to defend their titles in Sperry. Montana signed the contract. Now he needed a partner. And then, he laid eyes on Richie Adams. A former ComPro Tag Team Champion. Someone who was searching for a direction. Montana made the offer. Adams accepted and the team was formed. And what a team it proved to be. The power and size of Montana. The technical prowess of Adams. All that was simply too much for The Swamp Men to handle. After Montana slammed Reptile on Amphibian, Adams covered both and took home the titles!
Montana and Adams certainly appear to be an odd couple in wrestling. Only time will tell if success can be long-term for the duo. In the meantime, perhaps Adams can learn some critter hunting strategy for spring.
