Lakewood Leads Charge To Eliminate Bullies At Memorial

Oklahoma wrestling veteran Brian Lakewood has spent the past several years coaching football and working in the Tulsa School system, but came out of retirement to face off against the Bullies at a fundraiser for Memorial High School last Saturday.

ComPro held the fundraiser at Memorial and after opening comments were made by ComPro owner Mike Two, Russ Rogers led Kyle Kelly and the returning Anthony Jackson to the ring, dressed in Edison regalia. Memorial and Edison are rival schools in the Tulsa system, so this was all done simply to be disrespectful and Rogers immediately feigned outrage at having been "tricked" into coming to Memorial. He announced to the crowd that he knew he was at the wrong place because Memorial didn't "smell like money", but instead reeked of "french fries and failure".

After running down the football team (which the fundraiser was for) and referring to them as the cheerleading squad, the Bullies seemed to be on the path to do whatever they wanted that night until the arrival of Brian Lakewood. Lakewood brought with him several of the other Memorial High School coaches as well as the band instructor and Mike Two decided to let both sides settle their differences in the main event with an 8-man tag team match.

When that main event opportunity arrived, again The Bullies did lots of talking (especially Jackson), but the Memorial team was all about the action. Flurries of quick tags kept the less experienced coaches fresh, but the Bullies seemed most intent on concentrating on Brian Lakewood, isloating him at times from the rest of the group. The action was all over the place and almost too much for referee Daniel Powers to control, but in the end, the Bullies found themselves staring at the ceiling as Lakewood and one of the other coaches scored a dual pin in the ring to the thrill of the assembled 300+ students, parents and supporters.

That wasn't the end though. As the show was closing, ComPro Champion Brandon Walker came out and confronted Mike Two, saying that because he was the champion, he deserved to be in the main event as opposed to Lakewood and the coaches. Lakewood, whose temper has always been on the short side, got in Walker's face, wondering how he could call himself as "heavyweight champion" when he looked more like a cruiserweight. With words and feelings about to boil over, Mike Two made a championship match between Walker and Lakewood on May 19. It will be the first one-on-one match for a Lakewood in almost 4 years. Ironically, the last time he had a singles match, it was against Jesus Rodriguez for the ComPro Title. Lakewood was unsuccessful in that venture. Perhaps fate will have a different outcome in store for him in 2012.
