The Stupidest WWE Rumors That People Actually Believed
Posted: Feb 10th 2012 By: mikeiles
Once in a while, on the Internet or otherwise, WWE fans will come across a rumor about a past or present performer that seems very unlikely to be true.
Like the material in The National Enquirer or The News of the World, such high school-esque rumors about WWE wrestlers are sensationalized drivel.
Yet, somehow, as opposed to ignoring stories that probably have no semblance of truth to them, a contingent of WWE followers entertain?and after a while?believe them.
Granted, most sidestep the ridiculous rumblings that waft in their general direction?on the basis of Occam's razor?but there are always the few who fan the flames because there is nothing better to do.
What's even worse than playing a part in festering the absurd, though, are those who ignite the slanderous waves to begin with.
And here we are?eight instances of farcical gossip that have taken on a life-sized tangibility of their own.
Randy Savage Allegedly Had an Affair with an Underaged Stephanie McMahon
In the years before Randy Savage passed away, many fans wondered why the WWE and "The Macho Man" never renewed their business relationship.
Certainly, as the WWE masses argued, something had to be amiss?something deplorable.
Making the situation even more perplexing was the fact that The Wrestling Observer Newsletter frequently made note of Vince McMahon's outbursts whenever Savage's name was broached in creative meetings.
Apparently, the mere mention of the former two-time WWF champion would cause McMahon's face to take on a somber, vindictive expression before bellowing:
"I do not want to do business with that man."
Soon enough, fans latched onto the most nonsensical notion for why the WWE chairman had seemingly blackballed the wrestling icon.
That is, several wrestling fans were (and still are) absolutely sure that an illicit affair between Savage and a 14-year-old Stephanie McMahon was to blame.
The story goes that Vince McMahon didn't find out about it until years after Savage made the jump from the WWF to WCW. Otherwise, if he had known, he wouldn't have warm-heartedly bid farewell to Savage on a 1994 edition of Raw.
However, there are two more plausible explanations for the dissolution of their relationship.
On one night, according to Roddy Piper, Savage slapped Vince in a bar, embarrassing the head honcho in front of his employees.
The second possible reason is that Savage took the prestigious Slim Jim sponsor with him to WCW, heavily undermining the WWF's bottom line, which was already in the red zone in the mid-1990s.
The Ultimate Warrior Died and Was Replaced by a Look-Alike
When The Ultimate Warrior hurtled towards the ring to save Hulk Hogan from the evil clutches of Sid Justice and Papa Shango at WrestleMania VIII, fans did a double-take.
At first, the live attendees at the Hoosier Dome?as well as the observers watching on TV?were too ecstatic to witness the Warrior's return after eight long months.
However, as the face-painted whirling dervish began to shake the ropes, the following dawned on the minds of many: Why did he look so different?
After all, his hair was shorter and it looked like he shed 30 pounds of muscle.
Immediately, the rumor mill was in full force?the Warrior had died and was replaced by an impostor. Believe it or not, the cause of his "death" in some circles was attributed to the tautness of his tassels, cutting off the flow of blood to his brain.
The fabricated story had picked up so much steam that, even today, it refuses to perish.
Truthfully, The Ultimate Warrior not only is among the living today, but his shorter hair and loss of muscle mass at the time could be ascribed to more logical reasons.
In actuality, he had snipped his long locks because he wanted a haircut; and as for his loss of muscle mass, he had to go "natural," as the the 1992 steroid scandal was in full swing.
"Sycho" Sid Lost Control of His Bowels Against The Undertaker at WrestleMania 13
One ludicrous rumor that people still discuss on message boards pertains to "Sycho" Sid accidentally expelling his fecal matter at WrestleMania 13.
It wasn't just any match, either, but the main event that saw Sid put his WWF title on the line against The Undertaker.
The incontinent "incident," which is now considered "fact" by some, apparently transpired when The Undertaker picked up the equal-sized Sid for a tombstone in the closing moments of the contest.
Fans have speculated whether Sid soiled his trunks beforehand or if the pressure applied to his torso?upon being lifted for "The Dead Man's" finisher?caused the unthinkable to "happen."
Undoubtedly, while Sid has been maligned for many things?including having "half a brain" by his own admission?there has been no evidence that corroborates this fetid rumor.
The Big Show Is Andre The Giant's Son
When "The Giant," now The Big Show, made his WCW debut in 1995, the WCW announcers would hint?sometimes outright state?that he was Andre The Giant's son.
It was no secret at the time, either, that WCW wanted to capitalize on the marketing potential of the ostensible blood relation between the giants.
In fact, WCW's intentions were so obvious that "The Giant," upon his unveiling, not only wore a replica of Andre's tights, but similarly feuded with the French native's most celebrated adversary, Hulk Hogan.
During that period, sly comparisons would be drawn by Bobby Heenan, for instance, whenever "The Giant" used Andre-inspired maneuvers against Hogan such as the vise grip and "caboose smash."
Eventually, the rumor?which inexplicably caught on as a legitimate claim?was put to rest by the time the NWO formed at Bash at the Beach 1996.
Nonetheless, like an Energizer Bunny from hell, the unsubstantiated rumor still persists.
Shawn Michaels and Vince McMahon Were Secret Gay Lovers
Hard to believe, right?
While there is absolutely nothing wrong with being gay, the rumor that Vince McMahon and Shawn Michaels shared a physical relationship has no merit.
As a matter of fact, the allegation is so lurid that it has become an urban legend of sorts.
How it started, or who planted the seeds, however, are questions that have yet to be specifically answered.
Although if one were to revisit the period when the clandestine tryst allegedly took place, it becomes clear that "The Heartbreak Kid" was a particularly easy target for such an allegation.
In the mid-to-late 1990s, he would prance in his leather chaps, undulate his hips, strip down to his pubic line and pout his ChapStick-ridden lips.
Making matters worse, Michaels posed for Playgirl, a magazine aimed at homosexuals, in 1996.
Not to mention, the then-WWF champion had enemies outside of his "Kliq," who bemoaned his excellent working relationship with McMahon.
Putting two and two together, it isn't difficult to understand why such a lascivious rumor came about.
Hulk Hogan and Brutus Beefcake Were Secret Gay Lovers
The rumor here, like the one with regard to Shawn Michaels and Vince McMahon, implicates Hulk Hogan and Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake as having "engaged in homoerotic behavior outside the ring."
Of course, the originator of this outrageous claim is Linda Bollea, the ex-wife of Hogan.
Proving she's not the only scorned former wife, Brutus Beefcake's ex-squeeze revealed similar sentiments.
For instance, in one interview, she found it "suspicious" how Beefcake would help Hulk with the toilet seat after one of his many back surgeries.
Could it be, instead, that there has been a true bond forged between two men who are secure in their own sexuality?
Hogan, too, has gone on the record stating that, if he were a homosexual, he "would embrace it."
Additionally, Beefcake, in possession of sufficient evidence proving otherwise, has filed an 18-page defamation suit against Linda's reckless claim.
That being said, there are still a group of people on the Internet who lend credence to the rumor.
Owen Hart Broke Steve Austin's Neck on Purpose
A despicable rumor that has unfortunately made the rounds alleges that the late Owen Hart purposely injured Steve Austin's neck at SummerSlam 1997.
Officially, the botched sit-down tombstone has been deemed an accident, but a minority contends that Owen consciously did it with the intent of stymieing Austin's push.
It's no secret that the Harts, especially Bret, were none too pleased with the "Attitudinal" direction the family-friendly WWE was moving towards at the time.
Moreover, one could make the argument that "Stone Cold" was single-handedly accountable for the shift to edgier programming.
Furthermore, the story goes that Austin explicitly asked Owen to not perform this variation of the pile-driver, but the traditional kind.
Not only did Owen perform the move, anyway, but according to Austin, "The King of Harts" didn't call him to apologize afterwards.
Suffice it to say, while some may flimsily twist the aforementioned "proof" to satisfy the off-the-wall conspiracy, Owen was unanimously held in high esteem by his co-workers.
The odds that any wrestler, let alone someone like Owen, would intentionally injure a fellow wrestler are virtually nonexistent.
The reason being is that wrestling, perhaps more so than any other sport or form of entertainment, requires painstaking commitment and mutual trust.
The Ultimate Warrior Is/Was Gay (for Pay)
As we've already established, there is absolutely nothing wrong with being homosexual.
However, when the "revelation" comes in the form of a misinformed and insidious rumor, it should be dispelled without hesitation.
By all accounts, The Ultimate Warrior is a heterosexual man with a wife and two daughters.
However, Hogan's former wife, Linda?along her parade route of labeling wrestlers associated with her husband as gay?has decided to poke fun at the Warrior's expense.
She has been quoted as saying that "the rumor" she's heard is that "the Warrior is gay." Needless to say, other than those fighting words, she has been unable to back up her statements with any substance.
In all likelihood, though, the comments made by Linda were in retaliation to a previously posted video by the Warrior, who alleged that she and Hogan had an "open marriage."
Linda's enmity toward the Warrior is rivaled by only The Iron Sheik, who made similar remarks about The Ultimate Warrior.
"Sheiky Baby," in his garbled and vindictive prose, has repeatedly called the Warrior a "male prostitute" who received monetary compensation in return for showering in front of other male onlookers.
Of course, like Linda, The Iron Sheik has every reason to exact revenge against the Warrior.
Notably, during a fan convention in 2007, the Warrior snubbed the former Iranian champion. The master of the "Camel Clutch" was so miffed that he randomly smacked his manager Eric Simms.
