Ex-pro wrestler works as Tybee animal control officer

Former professional wrestler Jerry Oates, who once battled a bear in the ring, rounds up lost pets on Tybee Island as its animal control officer.

Tybee Island Police spokeswoman Marella Eaton said Oates is a good fit for the job. "He's definitely got the whispering nature," she told the AJC. "He works well with animals and people," she said.

Police chief Bob Bryson met the retired wrestler at a local gym, and he seemed like a good fit for the job. He was hired in June.

Eaton said Oates, 63, brings a lot of energy to the department and has excellent customer service skills.

Oates began pro wrestling at age 22 in Orlando, and won several titles. He also operated a gym in Columbus for two decades.

Oates lives in nearby Thunderbolt. He's a definite animal lover, said Eaton. "He has a standard poodle," she noted.
