Why Doesn't Dexter Like Women?
Posted: Nov 14th 2006 By: CMBurnham
When the name Dexter Hardaway is mentioned, several connecting terms immediately come to most fans' minds: talented, scrappy, champion. But recently, Dexter's actions might bring the word "misogynist" onto that list. Does Dexter actually hate women? His actions seem to indicate an underlying issue with the fairer sex, as indicated by the following evidence.
Dexter's had professional associations with 2 women in Oklahoma: Leather and Jessica. The association with Leather was probably the most complex. Dexter and Leather were romantically involved for a time outside of the wrestling business, but things weren't always smooth for them near the ring. Leather left the side of Dexter for a brief alliance with the New Texas Outlaws, but after being fired by them for not holding up her weight in the group, Dexter went out of his way to woo her back to his side. For a few shows, he showed up with presents, candy & flowers all to prove that he wanted her back. Eventually, they were reunited and seemed determined to meet the competition head on.
Competition came in the form of Lily McKenzie for Leather and the other members of the Fraternity of Sin for Dexter. 2005 saw these pairings frequently. Then, the SRPW Tag Team Title tournament began and still Leather remained paired with Dexter as he & Bobby Dalton pursued the gold together. They were ultimately unsuccessful in that venture, but stayed together as a team, always with Leather at ringside to cheer them on.
But then the rumours started. Was Bobby becoming too friendly towards Leather? Was Bobby focusing more on what was going on outside the ring rather than what was happening inside the ring? Leather continued to deny any wrong doing as things worsened between Dexter & Bobby, culminating at a point where Dexter reformed Northern Threat with Luc Lapointe. This didn't make Leather happy as Luc was being accompanied to the ring by Lily McKenzie and Leather and Lily had a storied past for the first half of 2005. At this point, it appeared the alliance was over and Leather disappeared from SRPW after losing the SRPW Women's Title (which she had held for almost 20 months) to Chiquita Suzuki. But by the beginning of 2006, Leather had resurfaced back with Dexter, pursuing the Women's Title which was now held by Lily McKenzie. As Dexter fought members of the Dalton/Legacy Gang, Leather was right beside waiting for her chance to win back the Women's Title. However, the association didn't work out very long. Health problems and general frustration at being unable to defeat Lily lead to Leather once again leaving Dexter's side.
At this point, Dexter took newcomer Jessi Jersey under his wing. Jessi had made her desire to wrestle known and Lily McKenzie hadn't taken the idea very well. So Dexter trained and prepared Jessi to pursue the women's title, all the while focusing his attention on the increasing power being wielded by the P.I.N.K. Nation in SRPW. Thanks to Dexter's guidance, on the very last SRPW card, Jessi beat Lily for the title. But one match later Dexter was on the losing team in the War Games-style match that brought an end to SRPW.
But Dexter wasn't one to rest easy. He had made appearances for AACW in April and attempted to reunite with Leather down there. That didn't work for him, so he brought down Jessi, who now simply went by Jessica. Dexter defeated X-Cal to win the vacant AACW Mid-American Light Heavyweight Title and he and Jessica used every tactic they knew to prevent that title from falling into the hands of people like X-Cal, Jack Dalton or Trailer Park Trash.
As Dexter became more successful, Jessica seemed to become more of a tool for Dexter and his abuse of her became more apparent. Verbal tirades and blame when he lost matches became the norm. Amazingly, her former arch-enemy Lily McKenzie, who was now the AACW Women's Champion, came to Jessica's rescue and the 2 have formed something of an alliance in recent weeks to fend off the challenges of Talon and Lady Venom.
At last week's AACW show, Lily came to the ring prepared to defend the Women's Title against Venom. But Dexter came down the ramp, announcing that he had gotten off the phone with Venom and she wasn't able to make it. Dexter than cleared the ring of the referee and, in an act of disgusting sexual bravado, declared that he thought Lily would look really good in his bed. As Dexter walked on Lily and tried to caress her face, she slapped his. Dexter, embarrassed by that action and already having lost a non-title match to J. C. earlier that night, seemed to snap and appeared prepared to deliver some physical violence to Lily, but the timely intervention of AACW Television Champion Prophet prevented an ugly situation from possibly getting uglier. Dexter retreated up the ramp as the Prophet stood between him and his fellow House of Strange member, prepared for any other vile action Dexter might come up with.
So, with this evidence presented, does it seem as if Dexter really hates women? He certainly seems to use them. But perhaps it's just a matter of his frustration coming out. He was unable to win the ComPro Title from Rocco Valentino. He's facing brand new challengers to his Light Heavyweight Title practically every week, including his former tag team partner Bobby Dalton two shows ago. Maybe the pressure is just getting to be too much for him. If this is the way that he responds to that kind of situation, it would make sense that when Valentine's Day comes around, Dexter's going to find himself in a very lonely place.
