McKeaigg Keeps Hands Full In MSWA Title Tourny

His friends are gone. His power is diminished. And now MSWA commissioner Shawn McKeaigg is desperately trying to do something to reassert himself as one of the most powerful people in the OKC wrestling area.

McKeaigg was recently deposed as commissioner of SWCW, replaced by his predecessor Miss Sheila after IZW Tag Team Champion Rage Logan lost to David Kyzer. As a result of this "All or Nothing" match, all members of Nemesis were required to leave SWCW. This took McKeaigg out of power there.

The next day, McKeaigg saw his power pyramid crumble as Impact, Inc. was driven out of the federation when they lost a 6-man Loser Leaves Town match to Awesome X and Double D. This time, though, things were a bit different. According to the stipulation, only the people competing in the match had to leave the company. McKeaigg wasn't a competitor and is now desperately clutching at straws to try and reassert his control over the federation.

McKeaigg arrived at the beginning of last week's MSWA event and tried to rally some fan support by wearing an "Impact, Inc. Sucks" T-shirt. He immediately proclaimed that he had done everything for the fans, taking credit for killing Impact, Inc. He then brought up the issue that everyone had been thinking about. Since Johnny Z was still the MSWA Mid-South Champion at the time that he was forced to leave the company, that title was now vacant. At the previous show, a #1 contender's battle royal had been held and SWCW Tag Team Champion 3rd Rail had won that match. So who was Rail to face? Rail didn't want to wait to hear about a possible contender. He came to the ring and stated that the belt should automatically be his since there was no champion for him to beat.

Double D then came out with La Reina de Corazones. Rail indicated that he had no beef with D, but apparently the same couldn't be said for D. D brought up history by mentioning that he had pinned Johnny's shoulders on October 31st in a non-title match, but he never got a title shot. He also pinned Johnny at the beginning of the 6-man Elimination Match. That's 2 pinfalls over the former champion, which, combined with the FACT that he was the last person Rail eliminated to win the Battle Royal, should put him an equal contendership position.

The ring became a little more crowded as Kevin Morgan arrived and brought up a match that he and Z had in November which showed that he was just as dominant of a champion as either of the other two men. And then ComPro, UWE & MWA Tag Team and (most importantly, in this situation) MSWA Oklahoma Champion Max McGuirk arrived and said that he should obviously be the #1 contender since he was the only other wrestler in MSWA at that time to hold singles gold. Since he held one title, he might as well hold 2! McKeaigg could see the situation beginning to get out of control and began invoking Johnny Z's name again, saying that, when Z was champion, he never ducked anyone. So, to honour Johnny's legacy, McKeaigg said that all 4 men would have to earn their way tor receiving the title. He annnounced that there would be 4 opening round matches in a title tournament to crown a new MSWA Mid-South Champion and all 4 of the men in the ring would be entered. To advance, you had to win and the matches would start immediately. No announcement of opponents. If they were as good as they said, they would be ready.

The first match pitted Tag Team champions against each other as 3rd Rail faced his SWCW Tag Team Championship partner Tyson Jaymes. Rail was completely focused and unrelenting, even though he was facing someone most fans would consider his best friend. Rail ended up winning with a sleeper, but then powerslammed Jaymes twice after the match, perhaps sending a message to future opponents in the tournament.

McGuirk, accompanied by the lovely Katy, faced off against Xavior. Having already suffered defeat at McGuirk's hands when he lost the Oklahoma Title, Xavior was hoping to avenge that loss and advance in the tournament. And he certainly had the upper hand for much of the match. This brought Shawn McKeaigg to ringside, where he went to great lengths to distract referee Mark Wilson. Max hit a devestating move, causing Xavior to fall near the edge of the ring where Katy grabbed Xavior's foot and held it, dropping out of sight until the 3 count was over and McGuirk had advanced in the tournament.

Happy at his success in the previous tournament match, McKeaigg tried to make history repeat itself when Double D faced off against John E. Stone. Again, McKeaigg made his presence known, but this time La Reina de Corazones yanked McKeaigg off the ring apron and kept him isolated as Double D hit the Moonlight Drive to advance to the next round.

The main event saw the final first round tournament match as Kevin Morgan took on SWCW All-American Champion David Kyzer. Once again, Shawn McKeaigg felt the need to do something to try and stack the deck in the tournament, so out to the ring he went and hopped up on the ring apron. Morgan went over and slapped him off the apron, which gave Kyzer the opportunity to schoolboy Morgan, but it was only good enough for a 2-count. Morgan then rallied and picked Kyzer up for the Oklahoma Stampede, which filled the bracket and brought the show to an end.

McKeaigg had batted 1 for 3 in his attempts to load the brackets, but now the stakes increased. MSWA sources remain unclear as to whether the tournament will conclude on April 3 or April 17, but whichever date, you can expect a desperate Shawn McKeaigg to try and influence the decision, putting someone on top who can ensure his control of MSWA is secure and unchallenged.
