He's A Regular Guy, But He And Pals Must Fight

The face beneath Killa-Whatt's red mask can never be revealed, for he is a caped luchador honoring the traditions of lucha libre, or Mexican wrestling.

In the ring, Killa-Whatt harnesses electricity to, as Whatt said himself, fight "injustice and generally put an electrical beat-down" on his fellow masked opponents in the Elot? Luchador Wrestling Federation, which is licensed by the Oklahoma Professional Boxing Commission.

Saturday night, Killa-Whatt will battle El Tlacuache, or The Possum, during the Luchapalooza Street Festival just outside Elot? Caf? in downtown Tulsa.

"He's a good guy," Killa-Whatt said of his nemesis. "I don't want to take anything away from him, but what's going to happen is I'm literally going to beat him to death. Then I'll use my electrical powers to bring him back to life, just so I can beat him down again."

Since its inaugural Cinco de Mayo lucha libre event, Elot? has presented the battles each first and third Thursday of the month. During each of those events, the restaurant met its 225-person maximum occupancy, and usually tripled total sales compared to other Thursday nights.

Luchapalooza ends the lucha libre season with an outdoor battle on the closed street between Fifth and Sixth streets. After Luchapalooza, events will occur monthly.

During Luchapalooza, the wrestlers will compete in a larger ring than usual. Matches from 5-8 p.m., like Killa-Whatt's battle, are child-friendly. And the festival includes activities
like crafting a child's own luchador mask.

As for title fights later in the evening, those are more adult-oriented. The title bout categories include heavyweight; female; tag-team; and a lottery bout, which will feature two middleweight wrestlers picked at random.

The festival includes live music from Sam and the Stylees, HipHopotamus and the Paul Benjaman Band, along with DJ music.

The event benefits HOPE, Health Outreach Prevention Education.

Killa-Whatt's match will certainly include his favorite AC/DC tune "Thunderstruck," and he'll no doubt showcase his version of the dance step the Electric Slide, but transformed into an elbow drop.

"I consider myself a showman above all else," Killa-Whatt said, "and bringer of peace and tranquility to all who deserve it."
