David Farmer Talks About Skandar Akbar
Posted: Aug 22nd 2010 By: CMBurnham
This never gets easier, It's never easy to say goodbye to a mentor, someone you watched growing up, someone who took valuable time from there life to help you. I have gone through a vast array of emotions since Thursday night. Right now I am remembering the wonderful times I had with this bigger then life legendary figure that captivated millions including myself for years. Growing up in Fort Worth the stars of WCCW were it. You had Nolan Ryan, The Dallas Cowboys & WCCW. Akbar was the meanest, dirtiest, low down human being I could ever remember watching him perform. Then I broke into professional wrestling & found that he was just wonderful. I have been trying to grasp the words to immortalize this man, But I would be writing for days, So i'll do my best to sum it up. Akbar was just so much fun to be around, He would always bring the joy out of doing an Independent show, no matter how down the house was or if morale wasn't that high for the evening, Ak would do what he could to get it going. When my mentor Johnny Valentine passed away in April of 2001, Akbar made it a point to call often & check on me, I always thought that was very kind of him, I got the pleasure of doing several shows with him over the next few years & it was always an honor.
In October of 2008 my company IHWE was making a One Night only Return, I wanted to do something special. So I contacted Bill Mercer, Marc Lowrance & Skandar about all coming in & doing a reunion. It was a lot of work, but I'll never forget that day, Ak arrived early, and was so kind to everyone, Then Mercer arrived then Lowrance. I remember at one point trying to focus, but I kind of started bein a kid again staring at the 3 WCCW alumnist & thinking my goodness they're all here. Seeing them perform was a pleasure, Afterwards we helped Ak get back to his table, where he was in pain, but quickly smiled & chatted with our roster. He called me the next day & praised how he was treated by My staff, Family & what not. That was a real high.
We were slated to Induct Ak into the IHWE Hall of Fame Oct 30th 2009 with Slick, But he got a great opportunity in South Texas to reunite wth some of his alumni, so we were going to reschedule. His schedule was hectic & he always was booked way in advance. Two weeks ago we spoke & we talked about him returning in Dec for a reunion with Gary Young at our show in Fort Worth, we both hung up excited. Ak is in a better place now, and I'm so happy for him, even though it hurts greatly to be without this wonderful man, I know he was hurting & He deserves to be with many of his friends & peers, Now he is, and when I think of Ole Ak, I smile..
Thank you Ak for everything, For the memories when I was a child, captivating me every chance you got, Thank you for helping me through a dark time, and Thank you for coming & being apart of the One Night Only event which thanks to you, Is still going today. I love you boss & Nobody in Texas will ever forget you.
