Can Anyone Defuse Ignition?

Can Anyone Defuse Ignition?

Posted: Feb 25th 2010 By: CMBurnham

They say you never forget your first. And the ComPro Showtime Title is Ignition?s first singles belt. Joining his brother, TAP Champion Reckless, as a solo title holder, Ignition has blazed a path of dominance in ComPro this year, using whatever means are necessary to keep that prestigious title under his control.

The demands of the Showtime title are that that champion must be at every ComPro event and defend that belt unless specifically given a waiver by ComPro owner Mike Two. Ignition has been very loyal to the ComPro audience over the past year, so when he upended the Canadian Red Devil for the belt, there was no concern amongst most of the fans that he might not be able to fulfill his contractual obligations. Instead, he immediately granted the Devil a rematch for the following week. During that match, Ignition faked an ankle injury and while the referee checked on his condition, Michael York took his tag team title belt and slammed it into the head of the Devil, rendering him easy pickings for the champion.

Week 2 as champion saw Ignition put the title on the line against Sam Stackhouse. Stackhouse?s size and amazing agility certainly Ignition on the defencive, but again Ignition?s compatriots, York & Reckless, were able to draw the referee?s attention away. That let J. P. Steele, who had a personal issue with Stackhouse, enter the ring and hit the girthy challenger with a steel chair. Ignition then took advantage of the situation and scored another pin, retaining the title.

Week 3 saw perhaps the most serious challenge so far as Ignition faced off against one of the men who brought him into the sport, Justin Lee. Lee had started almost 8 ? years ago and had partnered with Ignition and his brother when they were wearing masks and were known as Sudden Impact. As a result, Lee was very familiar with the tricks that Ignition and his entourage would pull and actually managed to counter all those efforts. He singlehandedly took down all the people standing outside the ring, but wasn?t able to watch his flank well enough and was caught with a belly-to-back suplex with a bridge for the win.

New week, new challenger. Dutch Hagen stepped up in week 4, looking to get another victory through the Dutch Oven. But as he was preparing to put Ignition into the terrifying finisher, Reckless entered the ring. Hagen?s tag team partner, TAP Tag Team Champion Jesus Rodriguez, got in to cut Reckless off, but this gave Ignition time to escape from Dutch?s clutches and grab his title belt, slamming it into the head of the ?Handsome? superstar. 3 seconds later, it was all a moot point.

So far, Ignition had been able to gain a pinfall win over every opponent he faced, but that all changed on February 6. Rookie sensation Evan Newcastle stepped up to challenge for his first title. This time, all of Boss Campbell?s shenanigans would be of no help. Frustrated, and fearing losing the only title they had control of, Michael York jumped in the ring after Newcastle had hit Ignition with the F5. This gained Newcastle the win by DQ, but not the title. Ignition, though, had gained nothing and looked kind of stupid as he left the ring area.

On February 13, Ignition stepped up to take out Jesus Rodriguez. As documented in an earlier article, Ignition retained and then Excellence Personified made their bid for the Tag Team Titles. And this past week, the was successful against Steven Sterling, which marks the only title defence made without any assistance at ringside. The next night, he followed that up with a victory over the returning Brandon Groom. Again, Reckless? presence at ringside was instrumental in the victory, dropping Groom?s throat across the top rope while referee John the Encourager dealt with the Showtime title belt that Ignition had brought into the ring. That marked the 8th different contender that Ignition (and his associates) had disposed of. Although the ComPro roster is pretty deep, it seems like the potential challengers are running out. No one has been able to neutralize the means that the champions uses to retain his belt and until that can happen, it looks like a long reign is in effect.
