Adams Boldly Makes Play For ComPro Title

Adams Boldly Makes Play For ComPro Title

Posted: Jan 28th 2010 By: CMBurnham

He placed fourth in the 2009 Oklafan Year-End Awards for Fresh Face of the Year. Now, Richie Adams wants to prove that he is no runner-up by winning the biggest prize there is in ComPro: the Heavyweight Title.

Adams certainly doesn?t lack for confidence. Since making his debut , he has compiled an impressive string of wins, marred only by a few losses. It?s true that he had some issues with fellow newcomer Sam Stackhouse, but he?s now looking past Sam and focusing on the only Triple Crown champion currently in Oklahoma: TAP Oklahoma Heritage, MWA MAX-Division and ComPro Champion Shane Morbid.

Most wrestlers, be they rookies or experienced veterans, will wait until they have proven themselves before attempting to challenge for a title, but Adams had no patience for that. At the first ComPro event of 2010, Adams came out during Shane Morbid?s interview. He had been announced by ComPro owner Mike Two as being Shane?s opponent that night and appeared to be entering the ring to show some respect for the champion. But before he even got a full sentence out of his mouth, Adams slapped Morbid in the face.

In addition to being brash and arrogant, Adams has also formed an alliance of some sort with Dustin Harp. Harp has been present at most of Adams? matches, lingering on the outside and providing a well-timed distraction. That was the case on January 2nd, when Adams faked a hyper-extended knee during his match with Morbid. This took the referee?s attention off the match and let Harp get in the ring. Harp got annihilated by Morbid, but it did give Adams a chance to recoup and take over in the match. Ultimately, Morbid retained the title, but Adams had gotten in the first blow in what would soon develop into a concentrated attack.

The following week, Adams would team with ComPro Tag Team Champions Michael York & TAP Champion Reckless against Morbid and Legion 13. But it seemed like a small army was coming to the ring because Adams and his associates were accompanied by Dustin Harp, ComPro Showtime Champion Ignition and manager Boss Campbell. The Canadian Red Devil would arrive during the match and he and Ignition would fight their way to the back, bringing a slightly better stack of odds, but it was still essentially 5-on-3. Morbid and L13 would win the match, but Adams targeted Morbid in a post-match attack, double ?teaming him with Harp until Adams was beaten off and Harp was subjected to 3 strong finishers from the popular threesome.

Adams was barely thought of at last week?s show, winning a convincing squash over Cobra Kai. But after Morbid had successfully defended the ComPro Title against Brian Blade, Adams appeared out of nowhere and laid Morbid out. He then took the title belt and held it up, telling the crowd that ?this would look good? on him.

This week, Adams finally got what he wanted: a 1-on-1 match with Morbid. It wasn?t a title match, but Mike Two had promised that if Adams could beat Morbid, he would get a title shot in the near future. Adams knew this was his greatest chance. He had Dustin Harp at ringside with him and was mentally prepared to face the might of the ComPro Champion. Shane Morbid knew better than to underestimate the challenger and was very deliberate in what he did, using his skill and knowledge to outthink the rookie sensation. The crowd rallied behind Morbid every time he needed their help and cheered every time he knocked the brash challenger down a peg. As the fans could sense that things were beginning to move to the end, the crowd started to call for one of Morbid?s new signature moves: the ?Barnaby Jones? clothesline. And Morbid delivered, connecting with full force and knocking Adams out. But before Morbid could cover him, Dustin Harp jumped up on the ring apron and began mouthing off at the champion. Adams, summoning massive amounts of reserve energy, used every last iota of strength to get behind Morbid and schoolboy him down to the mat. He then put his feet on the ropes for Dustin to hold while he grabbed a handful of tights. All this was too much for the champion to overcome and Shane?s shoulders were counted down for 3.

Morbid was irate and took some of his aggression out on a fan who had been heckling him during the match. But he ended his promo with the message that he intended to knock Adams? teeth out. Adams would do well to take this threat seriously. Morbid announced to the crowd that he is a former 16-time champion in his 8-year career and he has no intention of losing any of his 3 titles any time soon. If Adams intends to be ComPro champion, he will have to be more prepared than he ever has been before. Adams knows that. And there is certainly no lack of confidence on his part. He has all he could want. The question now is whether he can turn that confidence into success or if he will be just another victim in Shane Morbid?s path.
