Accolades Pile Up For Masked Star
Posted: Jun 19th 2009 By: CMBurnham
Opportunity seems to be knocking heavily on the door of El Super Colibri. At the beginning of the month, he competed in a brutal 5-way ladder match to become the 1st MWA MAX-Division champion. This past weekend, Colibri won yet another title, plus a contract good to secure him a title shot against any champion in ComPro he wants.
Colibri was one of ten individuals entered in a gauntlet match, which opened Night of Champions XV. The first two competitors were Kobra Kai and TAP Oklahoma Heritage Champion Shane Morbid. Morbid had no problem disposing of the masked martial artist and exerted only minimally more effort against Mighty Mouse. Things then turned south for Morbid as he was met with TAP Champion Reckless. As usual, Reckless was accompanied by his twin brother Ignition and their manager, the Shadow of Death. After two matches, some of Morbid's defences were down and he wasn't prepared to deal with the 3-on-1 situation he faced. Thus Morbid was eliminated and the next phase of the gauntlet began.
Reckless' first opponent was the returning Amazing Bolo, a surprise to everyone in the arena as they had been told that his contract would had not been renewed and he was no longer employed at ComPro. Bolo certainly wanted to capitalise on the opportunity and hit Reckless with a flurry of moves. But the absence from the ring for Bolo showed as his timing was off on some moves and he was eventually rolled up. But then, AWFUL Champion Kevin Morgan strode to the ring. The massive competitor wasted no time in gaining a measure of revenge against the men who eliminated him from the ComPro Showtime Title tournament and Morgan now stood as the top man in the gauntlet.
Morgan was thrown an easy bone in his first challenge as he faced Trey Christian. The most difficult aspect of this match for Morgan was not to break up laughing at the beginning as Christian attempted to persuade both Morgan and referee John the Encourager to do some disco dancing with him. While Christian is a fun-and-games kind of guy, it was time to be serious and he was quickly annhilated by Morgan. Morgan then was matched with Jesus Rodriguez, who was accompanied by Ray Martinez. Martinez's mouth, combined with his penchant for outside interference, took Morgan out of the picture and Rodriguez looked to be on his way to climibing the hill for a championship shot.
That didn't last long as Rodriguez faced El Super Colbri. These two men had a long history against each other as Martinez heavily recruited Colibri to join La M during Martinez's early days in ComPro. After a highly competitive match, Colibri stood tall, ready to take on the next challenges.
The first of these challenges wasn't much as Colibri had to fight off Das Karnage. Though both men are X Division wrestlers, Colibri's record is much more successful than Karnage's and soon, the man the fans call "Goat Boy" was eliminated. That brought out the last entrant, TAP Tag Team and MWA Tag Team Champion Tim Rockwell. Along with his manager Stevie Caballero, Rockwell confidently strode to the ring, announcing his plan to win the gauntlet and then cash the contract in for a shot at the ComPro Tag Team Titles, hoping to make himself a Triple Crown Tag Team Champion once more. Colibri was completely unconcerned with Rockwell's wishes took the battle to him. At one point, it seemed that Rockwell was so overmatched, he took the mic and offered to reform Team Super Terrific and make a play for the tag team Titles that way. Colibri's response to this "offer" was a punch to the jaw. There was no trust left for Rockwell and nothing was going to stop Colibri as he efficiently disposed of the final competitor and stood proud as the winner of the Gauntlet match. ComPro owner Mike Two delivered the contract for Colibri to sign. He may use the contract for any title match he wants. The only stipulation is that he must give one week's notice before the match can be signed.
Colibri's success continued the next day as he was one of seven men entered in a Battle Royal to determine the 1st TAP Adrenaline Champion. The battle royal saw the TAP Debut of several stars including ComPro Oklahoma X Division Champion Goldeneye and both members of Dawn of Extreme. The match came down to Colibri and Ignition and a mistimed charge against Colibri on the ropes resulted in the twins's elimination from the ring. Again, Colibri had overcome huge odds and was now a dual singles champion.
Colibri is scheduled to make his first MAX-Division Title defence on July 10 in a 1-on-1 match., which he will probably be thankful to participate in after all the muti-person conflicts he's been in over the past couple of weeks. But his success in those matches proves that Colibri is one of the top stars in Oklahoma and will always give his all, no matter the odds.
