Morbid/Hardaway War Finally Ends

Morbid/Hardaway War Finally Ends

Posted: May 17th 2009 By: CMBurnham

Shane Morbid vs. Dexter Hardaway may have been the most personal feud in Oklahoma this year. Lots of wrestling feuds are hyped by promoters and announcers as being one where "neither man will come out the same". That proved to be very true in this case as one of those men almost didn't leave the ring under his own power.

Ever since Dexter threw fire in the face of Shane, Morbid has been demanding a shot a revenge. And then a few weeks ago, Dexter upped the ante by committing what amounted to a felony act of hit-and-run after the TAP show in Muskogee in April. Shane could very easily have pressed charges against the veteran indy star, but that's not his way. He wanted revenge and he wanted it in the ring. But he knew he was going to need the right kind of match.

On May 2, a table and chairs were set up in the ring as the crowd entered for the show. And when it started, ComPro owner Mike Two entered and, after running down the other matches signed for Night of Champions XIV, called Dexter Hardaway, Talon and Shane Morbid to the ring. Talon arrived, but neither Dexter nor Shane made their presence known. Talon strode up to Mike Two, took the microphone and declared that Shane would not show up and Dexter wasn't there, but she has his power of attorney. Mike said that was fine, but again requested that Shane come out. Shane finally arrived and the crowd immediately started chanting "Smoke Her Lips!", addressing Talon. Morbid responded that half of Oklahoma City had already done that and that Talon is nothing to him.

After Shane recapped to the crowd the multi-month issue between Dexter and himself, Dexter finally strode through the curtain. At that point, the issue turned deeply personal as each man brought up issues from their opponent's past. Morbid mentioned how Dexter had chances in Deep South Wrestling and with Harley Race (who Shane called a "piece of crap"), but he screwed them both up. He promised to smoke Dexter next week. Dexter said he started in 1997 and had done more than Shane had ever dreamed of. He told the crowd that Shane had opportunities to go to Ring of Honor and Japan, but couldn't keep his mouth shut, so those were lost. According to Dexter, the only reason Shane is in ComPro is because the fans care about him for some reason. 3 years ago, Dexter met Talon and started a family. According to Dexter, Shane abandoned one family and leaves another at home alone every weekend so he can come wrestle. The more Dexter talked, the more irate Shane became and Dexter could tell, taunting him to hit him, so there would be no match between them.

Dexter finally crossed the line when he asked Morbid what it felt like to go home and tell his family that he had been run over. Morbid lost it and tried to attack Dexter at that point, but Mike Two backed him off, although the table sitting between them was broken in the ensuing action. Sensing that any further discussion might put things in a crisis situation, Mike Two brought out the contract. Remembering how Morbid disposed of his former tag team partner Cast-Iron Cothern, the crowd began to chant "I Quit Match!". Mike Two told them that he heard their request, but that no one can say "I Quit" if they're dead in the street or laying in a burn unit. He said that after this war, there could only be one man standing victorious, so he declared that the match would be a Last Man Standing Match.

The match may have been the most out of control match in ComPro history and it's a minor miracle that both men waited a week for it to happen. But in the main event on May 9, both men brought everything they had and then some. For the first time in ComPro history, the match spilled outside the ringside area and went through the crowd as both men battled back towards the souvenier area. The crowd watched in awe as an irish whip by Dexter was reversed and Dexter slammed into the wall of the arena, then was dragged like a limp sack of potatoes back into the ring. But the battle wasn't over. Dexter found a way to get a pair of scissors into the ring and stabbed Shane in the forehead. Shane would later return this favour and both men painted the canvas red with their blood. Shane then pulled a completely new trick out of his bag by spitting green mist in the face of Dexter. On multiple occasions, the counts on the prone bodies reached 8 and 9, but neither man could do what it took to bring an end to this war.

The end finally arrived after another reversed Irish Whip, resulting in Dexter colliding with his wife Talon on the ring apron. Both men then battled to a corner, where Dexter had Shane dazed. Dexter went outside and climbed the ropes behind Shane, perhaps intending to do a Blockbuster or drive a knee into Shane's spine as he came off the top. Whatever his intentions, they never came to pass as Shane caught Dexter, positioned him and powerslammed him off the top rope into the middle of the canvas. Dexter let out a horrifying scream of agony as he landed and then lay grunting as the referee counted. Unable to move and signalling "X" with his arm, Dexter could not recover and Shane finally gained some revenge.

But even though Shane had won, all attention was on Dexter as he lay in the ring. Talon crawled in to check on her husband and referee Clinton Starks remained at the fallen star's side as well. Stevie Caballero, a longtime friend of Dexter's, rushed to the ring and dug his cellphone out, calling medical personelle. While this was all going on the fans were being ushered out, Shane looked on. Perhaps he was concerned, perhaps he was just checking to see if Dexter was faking. But in the end, he couldn't help but remind Dexter about karma and declared that he had just smoked Dexter's lips.

With help from several people, including Mike Two, Dexter was eventually assisted from the ring. At this point, his physical condition has not been revealed. All attempts to get any information have resulted in statemnets that he is recuperating with his family. Rumours are circulating that Dexter may have been injured beyond the possibility of wrestling again, while others suggest that he simply won't return to ComPro. Whatever the case, this violent match goes down in history and both men will deal with the consequences for a long, long time.
