Colibri Poised To Fly To Top Of The X Division

Posted: May 1st 2008 By: CMBurnham

More than just about anyone else, El Super Colibri personifies the X Division in ComPro. Yet, he has received very few shots at the ComPro Oklahoma X Division Title. That never seemed to bother him, as he has never backed down from any opponent, even those outweighing him by 50-75 pounds. Now, having won a 2-night tournament, Colibri is guaranteed to receive a shot at the gold. This time, it seems likely that he will capitalise on that chance.

Colibri got a lucky draw in the first round, facing perennial loser Rico Suave. His second round match was much more challenging as he took on ComPro Tag Team & TAP Champion The Canadian Red Devil. This was a very even match, with both men of a similar size and with many similarities in style. It appeared that the Devil had Colibri beaten at one point in the match, but Shane Morbid, whom the Devil had beaten to advance to the second round, came out and broke up a pin attempt by the Devil. This allowed Colibri to set up the 918, followed by the frog-splash and move on.

His opponent in the finals would be Justin Lee. Justin is a 2-time ComPro Oklahoma X Division Champion and one of the most decorated X Division champions in the state. Justin faced off against Cold Blooded Chris in the first round and had the added assistance of Oklafan.com senior editor C. M. Burnham in his corner. But that was a one-time appearance and when Justin moved on to the second round, he was all alone against Cast-Iron Cothern. Like his match against C. B. C., Justin found himself at a disadvantage in size and power, but he made up for that in quickness and heart. And those factors allowed him to move past the mutached menace and into the finals.

In the main event of the evening, Colibri and Justin faced off. Both men were tired from their earlier endeavours and it showed, as they were not as crisp or precise with their moves. The match was long, as both men were very familiar with each other and knew counters to all the regular moves you would expect in their matches. After almost 15 minutes of action, the Gentleman Thugs appeared and interfered, beating up Justin. ComPro commissioner Kitty had no choice but to declare Jusitn the winner by DQ, but Justin would have none of that. He said the X Division is about clean wins and asked for the match to be restarted. Colibri agreed and Kitty made it happen. Again, both men were evenly matched, if somewhat more tired. This time, there wasn't as long of a wait as ComPro Oklahoma X Division Champion Tim Rockwell and his manager, Big Stevie Caballero, came out. Rockwell attacked Colibri, beating him up. Again, Kitty was forced to announce a winner by DQ, this time Colibri. But again, this would not be the end. Colibri said Justin wanted a clean finish and so did he. So one more time Kitty restarted the match. Both men were near exhaustion, but they persevered on until Colibri caught a lucky move and got the 3-count. Justin looked shocked, as his track record in tournaments speaks for itself. But in the end, he raised the hand of his opponent high and celebrated as Colibri stood victorious with the trophy made for the winner of this event.

Colibri now has a shot at the ComPro Oklahoma X Division Title waiting for him. And with his former Team Super Teriffic teammate holding the gold, things should be a great deal more personal. The thing that made TST such a great team was the diversity of ability and that will make for an interesting match as both men have very different strengths. Colibri flys. Rockwell brawls. Colibri feeds off the fans. Rockwell hates the fans and only responds to Caballero's remarks. Rockwell has been a champion on multiple occasions. Colibri has yet to taste gold once.

May 17th is scheduled for the next Night of Champions at ComPro. Presumably, this meeting will occur then. When it does, fireworks will come a month and a half early to ComPro. And the colours of those fireworks may reflect the colours of a new X Division Champion.
