Jinder Mahal calls Penta beating Rey Fenix a ‘missed opportunity’

Jinder Mahal has opened up on WWE’s decision to have Penta beat Rey Fenix in the Roman Reigns World Championship tournament final.

Earlier this week, during the latest episode of Monday Night RAW, Penta defeated his brother Rey Fenix to earn a World title shot against Roman Reigns in Mexico City, Mexico.

However, former Champion Mahal, aka Raj Dhesi, believes booking Penta to win instead of Fenix was a missed opportunity. “I can’t say that I’m surprised, but I am surprised with the result. Penta, who to me was the obvious choice to face Roman in Mexico City,” Mahal said during his recent appearance on Busted Open. “I really believe it was a missed opportunity. Rey Fenix had more to gain from this.”

“Rey is an incredible performer, wrestler, but Penta outclasses, and I mean this- this is a poor choice of words- beats him when it comes to performance, the character, the entrance. Rey’s gear, Rey’s not the mask, Rey’s gear, entrance music could have been beefed up, and this to me was the opportunity.

However, Bully Ray’s point was that WWE didn’t allow Fenix to win as they had no plans involving him. Mahal, while in agreement with Ray’s points, still felt that with proper planning and a beefed-up presentation from WWE, he could have been a star.

“Put Rey over. Give him that generational- I’m not gonna say generational win, generational performance against Roman in Mexico City. That crowd reception, that response, that’s gonna carry on wherever you go, wherever he’s on television, whether that’s Raw or AAA, that’s gonna carry forward. Rey could have benefited more from the win than Penta.”

Penta is now scheduled to challenge Reigns for his WWE World Championship on September 14, 2026, in Mexico City
