Jim Ross received ‘great news’ after mass found on kidney

Amid his recovery from brain surgery, Jim Ross received some “great news” about another worrying health issue.
Ross’ Grilling JR podcast aired a new episode this week for the first time since his August 12 brain surgery. While giving an update on how he’s feeling, Ross shared that doctors found a mass on one of his kidneys. Ross was a nervous wreck over the situation but was able to breathe a sigh of relief after an appointment on Wednesday. From the sounds of it, the oncologist does not believe Ross has cancer. And if the small mass does end up being cancerous, it should be an easy process to eliminate it.
“On Wednesday afternoon, I had my oncology appointment because they saw a mass on my kidneys — a kidney. And I got good news on that,” the 74-year-old Ross said. “The oncologist thinks I don’t have any cancer, but they’re not sure. There’s a lump there. It may be cancerous, but it’s so small they can operate on it and eliminate it. The last thing I want to do is get cancer surgery and then go back to the frigging hospital for a few days. This last [time] was eight days. So I got good news on that. I’m blessed there, thankful. That was a good deal.”

Because he was so overwhelmed and worried about potentially getting bad news, Ross could barely sleep the night before this appointment.
“My doctor’s meetings have been productive. I found out that I didn’t have serious cancer on my kidney. And that was great news because I didn’t hardly sleep a wink at night before that appointment,” he said. “I was just overwhelmed with worry, you know? Because you’re going to find out what the story is. And, man, I’ve had a lot of doctors appointments. I’ve had more doctors appointments in the last few months than I’ve ever had in my life. And I guess I should just count my blessings that all these other years, I’ve been healthy as a horse. But we’re on it. I’ve got good doctors here, good specialists.”
When asked about a potential timeline for dealing with this mass, Ross said they still need to do more tests before scheduling an operation or whatever ends up being the plan.
“They got to do tests. They got to do another MRI,” Ross said. “So I can’t give you a direct answer because I don’t have one. But I accelerated all that stuff as best I’m able to to move this thing along. My oncologist, we had a great meeting on Wednesday afternoon. I was very blessed. I didn’t sleep very good Wednesday night, Conrad [Thompson]. Because I didn’t know if I was going to get the verdict of, ‘Well, JR, here’s the story.’ And thank God that wasn’t the case.”
Ross underwent colon cancer surgery in summer 2025 and has battled skin cancer in the past.
Jim Ross won’t be at AEW All In 2026 —
Ross was hoping to make his AEW commentary return at Sunday’s All In pay-per-view in London, but that won’t be able to happen. The timeline is just too soon for Ross after his brain surgery. Doctors urged caution because they don’t want to see Ross fall on the plane and have to make an emergency landing or fall in London and end up in a hospital so far away from home.
