Jim Ross undergoes successful brain surgery

The wrestling world got some good news on Wednesday morning with Jim Ross undergoing successful brain surgery.
Ross, 74, underwent a “shunt” procedure in Norman, Oklahoma on August 12. His podcast co-host Conrad Thompson shared that everything went well, and Ross should be back home before the end of the week. Thompson asked everyone to keep Ross in their prayers during his recovery.
“Happy to report that our pal @JRsBBQ had a successful procedure this morning!” Thompson wrote. “I heard from his lovely daughter this morning that everything went well and good ole JR is expected to be back home by Friday! Please keep JR in your prayers as we hope for a speedy recovery!”
Ahead of surgery, Ross sent out a message thanking everyone for the outpouring of support he’s received. He noted that the procedure was going to involve drilling a hole in his brain so a small tube could be inserted. This will drain the excess fluid on Ross’ brain, which should help with the memory and balance issues he’s been facing.
Ross, despite having surgery coming up, made his scheduled trip to Minneapolis for WrestleCon a couple of weeks back and is hoping to be in London for AEW All In 2026 on August 30. His AEW contract status is still a question, with Ross saying last week that he has not signed a new deal yet. His current contract is scheduled to expire at some point this month.
Ric Flair wishes Jim Ross a speedy recovery —
In a tweet this morning, Ric Flair wished his “dear friend” Ross a speedy recovery from surgery. Flair praised Ross and Jerry “The King” Lawler as the best pro wrestling commentary team of all time and said he knows Ross has been a warrior for his entire life.
“To My Dear Friend Jim Ross @JRsBBQ, Who I’ve Known Since The 80s. You And Lawler, As A Team, Represented The Best Pair Of Announcers In The History Of Our Business, And I’ve Known Them All,” Flair wrote. “I Wish You A Speedy Recovery From Your Brain Surgery Today! You Have To Stay Strong And Make It Through This Brother! You’ve Been A Warrior Your Whole Life.”
