Jim Ross thanks fans for ‘outpouring of support’ ahead of brain surgery

Posted: Aug 12th 2026 By: Joseph Currier

Before he undergoes brain surgery, Jim Ross sent out a message thanking fans for all of the support they’ve given him during his health battle.

Ross, 74, has been dealing with memory and balance issues and had to spend more than 30 days in the hospital this May-June. He is scheduled to undergo surgery tomorrow (August 12). The operation is a “shunt,” which removes excess fluid from the brain. Ross is optimistic that this will help the situation.

“Thanks for the outpouring of support regarding my upcoming brain surgery,” he tweeted. “A hole will be drilled in my skull and a small tube will be inserted [into] my stomach to better manage/drain excess brain fluid. I’m optimistic. Thanks to all.”

It’s been a difficult few years for Ross health-wise, and falls in particular have been a problem for him. This operation should improve things.

Ross was a guest at WrestleCon in Minneapolis during SummerSlam week and is hopeful that he’ll be able to make the trip to London for AEW All In 2026 at the end of this month. The plan going into surgery is that he’ll only need to spend one day in the hospital.
Jim Ross’ AEW contract —

This month is when Ross’ current AEW contract is slated to expire, and he has not signed a new deal yet. Ross wants his announcing career to continue but knows his time on commentary is winding down. He’s content with all he’s accomplished and knows he’s had a wonderful career in pro wrestling.

Ross’ current AEW contract was a one-year deal signed in August 2025. Under the deal, he’s helped out on commentary at pay-per-view events.
