The Gimmick Table: The Origin of The Super Invader
Posted: Apr 10th 2026 By: Brian Damage - RingTheDamnBell.com
A gimmick is something that is intended to hook the attention of fans to a wrestler. They may be outrageous or steeped more in reality. Whatever the case may be, some have succeeded and many others have failed. The Gimmick Table takes a look at the origins of some of your favorite and not-so-favorite gimmicks of professional wrestlers.
Today We Browse the Gimmick of The Super Invader
In 1992, Bill Watts brought an old familiar face to World Championship Wrestling under his management in Ray Fernandez. Perhaps most known during his WWF stint as Hercules Hernandez. Instead of having Fernandez continue with that familiar gimmick, Watts decided to place a mask on him and claim he hailed from Bangkok, Thailand. His new named was ‘The Super Invader’ and would be managed by Harley Race.
While Fernandez was no stranger to wrestling under masked gimmicks during his career, this decision surprised many within WCW at the time. The Super Invader would not speak a word and be referred to as a “silent assassin from the Orient.” There was a belief that while Watts was very familiar with Ray Fernandez as a wrestler, Watts did not want him associated with the Hercules character.
During Fernandez’s final years in the WWF, he was used mostly as a glorified enhancement talent losing to newer stars in the company at the time. Watts wanted to give Fernandez a completely new gimmick to be taken seriously by WCW fans. The Super Invader gimmick didn’t last very long. After several months, Fernadez left WCW and wrestled elsewhere including New Japan Pro Wrestling.
