Colibri Forces Martinez To Eat His Words
Posted: Feb 5th 2008 By: CMBurnham
The high-flying superstar El Super Colibri had been brought down to earth rapidly upon the arrival of Ray Martinez in ComPro. Martinez quickly recruited Jesus Rodriguez and then set about trying to do the same with Colibri. But Colibri resisted Martinez at every turn. Even the betrayal of Pork Chop, who adopted the moniker El Choppo upon siding with Martinez and joining La M, did not keep Colibri from showing up and putting up the good fight. But there was one thing that Colibri couldn't deny: shortly after their war began, Martinez told Colibri in front of the ComPro fans that he would never win another match in ComPro until he joined La M.
And it seemed as if that prophecy was coming true. Losses to Bernard Funk, FCW Champion The Canadian Red Devil, Cold Blooded Chris, and sometime associate Tim Rockwell all racked up. Sometimes it was due to distraction from La M. But other times, it seemed to be a psychological game. Martinez's words rang deep in Colibri's head and even though he was physically at the top of his game, mentally, he was already beaten before he entered the ring.
Some fans began to question whether Martinez's prophecy was going to be fulfilled. They hated to see Colibri keep losing, but it was even more painful to think that he might sell out to La M to start coming out on the victorious side. But this past Saturday, Colibri finally overcame that mental hurdle and might be on a straight path to redeeming himself sooner than later.
Colibri was set to face ComPro Tag Team Champion Jesus Rodriguez and it appeared that things were off to the same path as usual. Martinez was at ringside and used every opportunity of distraction to assault Colibri. Sometimes it was with the tire iron. Sometimes, just his fists. For Martinez, it was a personal issue as the previous week, Colibri had stolen his Spanish-English dictionary (which he also uses as a weapon on occasion). This activity continued throughout the match and it appeared that the victory for the La M member was inevitable. Then, instead of being a victim, Colibri became an aggressor, delivering a hard dropkick to Martinez when he least expected it and injuring his arm. When Rodriguez turned to look to his fallen manager, Colibri rolled him up from behind and scored his first victory in 2008.
Colibri and the fans were overjoyed and Martinez would have been irate if he hadn't been in such pain. But intermission took place and gave Martinez a chance to partially recover. When he came out with the other half of the ComPro Tag Team Champions, El Choppo, he was still in pain, but seemed ready to perform more of his dirty deeds. And it seemed likely that he would need them since Choppo was facing the #1 wrestler in the state: Tim Rockwell. Rockwell arrived to a thunderous ovation and the matchup began. It was back and forth between the men with Tim's experience countering Choppo's size and power. And Martinez was not able to interfere as much, although that didn't mean he couldn't make his presence known. One such occurrence resulted in Choppo locking on a form of a Boston Crab and looking for a submission. But, with Martinez taking the attention of referee John the Encourager, Colibri made a surprise appearance again and delivered a resounding kick to Choppo's head, allowing Rockwell to score the pin on the other half of the tag team champs.
With the curse seemingly broken, Colibri now stands poised with a decision to make. He could continue to make life difficult for La M. He's got a close associate in Tim Rockwell and could certainly make a bid for the Tag Team titles. Or he could go back to chasing what has always seemed more dear to him; the ComPro Oklahoma X Division title currently held by Shane Morbid. But perhaps Colibri has won the most important victory in his brief time in the ring. He's refused to allow his life and career to be ruined by a bully.
