Walker Stewart announced on his Facebook that he has signed a contract to work for STARDOM: “I’m incredibly honored and grateful to share that I’ve officially signed a contract with STARDOM, Co. Ltd. to serve as the company’s new Director of Global PR & Communications. What began last August as freelance English commentary work for STARDOM events in Japan has since grown into something far greater than I could have imagined. Over the past nine months, I’ve poured my heart into helping amplify STARDOM’s voice to fans around the world — and to see that effort recognized by the leading women’s wrestling company in the world is both humbling and deeply meaningful. The more things continue to change, the more they stay the same as well. I will continue my work with New Japan Pro-Wrestling as their Lead English Broadcast Commentator and Creative Content Producer, and I will proudly remain the English voice of STARDOM as well. My life's mission has been to grow professional wrestling across the world - whether it is behind the microphone or behind the curtain. Now, my impact will not just be heard on-air, but felt in the roots of joshi wrestling's most iconic promotion. Forever grateful, forever humbled, and forever determined to work toward a better professional wrestling landscape.
A half a dozen WWE Legends were invited to last week’s “Saturday Night’s Main Event” and were shown at ringside throughout the two-hour broadcast. Jimmy Hart and Bushwhacker Luke, both Hall of Famers, were the first ones to get some camera time. They were followed by former WWF Women’s Champion, and Tampa’s own, Leilani Kai and Tatanka. The last two shown on camera were WWE Hall of Famers Mike Rotunda and Barry Windham, the duo formerly known as The U. S. Express. Kai, who has not appeared on WWE television since 1994, posted on Facebook, “All I ever wanted” with a photo of herself sitting at ringside and the lower third graphic with her name. Also, Lilian Garcia returned to do all the ring introductions for the night, and Hall of Famer Jesse “The Body” Ventura also returned for several segments with Joe Tessitore and did commentary for the Cage Match between Damian Priest and Drew McIntyre.
Leilani Kai, who appeared at last week’s “Saturday Night’s Main Event” has signed a WWE Legends contract, which includes future appearances in video games, action figures, and other future appearances. It should also be noted that she is one of 5 people that were involved in matches at the first Wrestlemania that are not in the WWE Hall of Fame, The others are King Kong Bundy, Matt Borne, David Sammartino and Cyndi Lauper.
As seen during the May 27th edition of “NXT”, Ricky Saints lost the men’s North American Title to Ethan Page while Stephanie Vaquer lost the NXT Women’s Title to Jacy Jayne. In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer of [http://www.F4WOnline.com]F4Wonline.com[/url] noted the following about both Saints and Vaquer losing their titles on the same night: “The reason was that both, along with Jordynne Grace, are all expected on the main roster imminently. There are reports of Vaquer to RAW and Grace to SmackDown. When asking, we were told that it appeared that way right now. We didn’t get a read on where Saints would be going.” Meltzer confirmed that all three were not expected in NXT for a long period of time as they were being paid more than others on the roster. Meltzer added that “those talents are usually targeted for shorter runs” in NXT.
Jim Ross gave an update on his health in the latest episode of the “Grilling JR” podcast. Ross underwent surgery Tuesday morning at 6am and said he was not currently in any pain. Doctors told him that the plan is to stay in recovery in hospital for the following six days, after which he can go home barring any complications. He said that he prepared himself mentally and physically for this, which is always stressful when it involves surgery. When asked by his co-host Conrad Thompson to explain the cancer situation, J. R. forgot which cancer he has and when Thompson mentioned colon cancer, he said no because he had that years ago. But, he did announce he was diagnosed with colon cancer over a week ago. “I can’t remember what I got. I got it in two places,” Ross said. J. R. likened his body to an old car, running it for too long and too hard. “I’m trying to really slow down after surgery,” he said, adding that he believes he can still do the shifts he had with AEW but he’s not sure anyone believes that. Ross said he will probably talk to AEW CEO Tony Khan over the next few weeks to see where he stands and put over Khan for taking care of him ever since he signed with AEW.
Jim Ross recently spoke on bringing Chris Benoit’s personal life into wrestling storylines: “Let me tell ya somethin’, folks — I’ve been around this business a long damn time. And I’ll say it plain: when WCW decided to take Chris Benoit’s real-life relationship with Nancy (Sullivan) and turn it into a damn storyline with Kevin Sullivan… they crossed a line. That wasn’t entertainment — that was exploitation. We’re talkin’ about real people, real emotions, real consequences. You don’t blur that line for a pop. You just don’t. Nancy was married to Sullivan, she leaves him for Benoit, and they’re workin’ matches while livin’ that exact story in real life? That’s not booking — that’s reckless. I don’t care how ‘real’ you want your angles to feel. There’s a time you gotta draw the line between the business and a man’s private life. And in this case? They went too far, and it was damn uncomfortable to watch. It never should’ve happened.” Ross went on to say this: ““Chris Benoit was arguably as fundamentally sound a wrestler as there ever was. He lived for the business—ate it, slept it, breathed it. He didn’t just wrestle, he obsessed over every detail of his performance. Night after night, he gave you everything he had. But what happened in the end… it shook us all to our core. The man I knew would never do what he did. Something had changed—whether it was brain trauma, emotional pain, or something we’ll never fully understand. I can’t excuse it. No one can. But I also can’t pretend he didn’t exist. He was one of the best in the ring, and one of the most tragic stories outside of it.”
