Former Mid-South Tag Team Champion Ricky Morton proved that he still had what it takes to be successful in the ring by winning the 2006 Rock & Roll Cup with partner Aaron Armor in Tulsa, OK last Sunday.
Morton, recently released from jail on charges of child support evasion and facing mounting medical bills, was a surprise guest at the benefit show held by Omni Wrestling Productions, promoted by former OCW owner John Crow.
Morton and Armor defeated Dexter Hardaway and IZW Hardcore Champion Kenny Campbell in the first round, then dealt another blow to IZW by defeating Tag Team Champions Impact, Inc. They faced the team of Bret Thunder & Skitzo who made it to the finals courtesy of victories over Seth Allen & Mid-South Tag Team Champion Aaron Neil and El Latino & Hector Navarro. Morton and Armor then scored the win to claim the trophy.
Many of Morton?s comtemporaries showed up to support him at this show, including former UWF Champion Steve Williams, Tracy Smothers (who lost his OWP Mid-South Title to 2005 Candido Cup co-winner Chase Stevens) and MSWA legend Tom Jones, whose son Cody is the current Mid-South Cruiserweight champion and scored an impressive victory over SRPW X Division Champion Mitch Carter.
