The Scoop

NEWS
Jeff Jarrett got a lot of talk last Saturday night for his promo regarding the Owen Hart Tournament that aired on “AEW Collision”. The full promo was long and segments would have had to have been canceled to fit it in, but the version on YouTube was a must-see, far more than the television version, and a longer cut should have aired. The unedited version can be seen by clicking here.

Six days after his backstage altercation with Jack Perry, C. M. Punk was terminated from All Elite Wrestling contract. Two months later, Punk made a shocking return to WWE at the conclusion of the 2023 “Survivor Series: WarGames” premium live event. On a recent episode of "Grilling JR," AEW commentator Jim Ross assessed the strides made by his former colleague following his resurgence in WWE. While inherently happy for Punk, Ross admits that a big part of him wishes he was still working for AEW. "I get text messages from him on a somewhat frequent basis because he's just checking on me to see how I'm feeling," Ross said. "He likes me and he respects me, and it's reciprocal ... I miss C. M. Punk. I thought he contributed greatly to the AEW roster when he was with us. To be perfectly candid, I wish he still was. How do you not want a talent the level of C. M. Punk not still with your company? It, personality-wise, just did not work out, and that's unfortunate." Since returning to WWE in September, "The Second City Saint" has notably found himself enveloped in a tense feud with "The Scottish Warrior" Drew McIntyre, who he recently screwed out of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, yet again. The latest collision between Punk and McIntyre came at the 2024 WWE “Clash at the Castle” event, in which McIntyre challenged Damian Priest for the World Heavyweight Championship. Unfortunately for McIntyre, his valiant efforts were not enough to overcome the low blow brought on by Punk and the South of Heaven that followed from Priest.

Jim Ross made a bold declaration by naming his top four worst wrestlers of all time. During an episode of his podcast “Grilling JR,” Jim Ross candidly singled out Ludvig Borga, Tiger Ali Singh, Brakkus, and Giant Gonzalez as the wrestlers who fell short of expectations. Ross didn’t mince words when he stated “Ludvig Borga was horrible. Tiger [Ali Singh] didn’t catch on, and we spent a lot of money on trying to get Tiger over. That didn’t work. Brakkus, as you mentioned, was not ready for primetime by any stretch, no way. As a human being, I liked the Giant Gonzalez, but as a pro wrestler, God bless his soul. He was just not very good.” Ludvig Borga had a relatively short stint with the WWF debuting in 1993 only to leave the company in early 1994. Tiger Ali Singh also had a short career with WWF, starting in 1997 and had his career cut short due to head injuries he sustained in 2001. Brakkus again also had a short career in wrestling mainly appearing in house shows from 1996 up until he left the company in 1998 having only three televised matches. Giant Gonzalez was perhaps the most accomplished wrestler on Ross’ list having wrestled for WCW, WWF, and NJPW during his career and even made an appearance against The Undertaker at “WrestleMania IX” in what is widely considered one of the worst “WrestleMania” matches ever.

Karrion Kross commented on Jacob Fatu’s WWE debut: “I’ve been fighting Jacob Fatu for over 10 years all over the continent from east to west…Trust me when I say this: #Smackdown is in DEEP sh*t. Good luck.”

The new WWE Vault channel has uploaded A. J. Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura from “Money in the Bank 2018”.

In an interview with Tokyo Sports, Josh Barnett named Katsuyori Shibata, Goldberg, Shayna Baszler, and Boltin Oleg as people he’d like to see compete at future Bloodsport Japan events.

Rob Faint of Ring the Damn Bell wrote a story entitled “Top Five Underappreciated Influencer in Pro Wrestling” and coming in at #1 was Ray Stevens. Others on the list include Ox Baker at #4 and Thunderbolt Patterson at #5. To read the entire story, click here.

Jim Ross posted on Tuesday that he had difficulty breathing and admitted himself to the hospital. But he posted on X on Saturday “Flying to NYC Saturday for #ForbiddenDoor. Wouldn’t miss it @AEW”.

Killbane suffered an ankle injury at the UWE event on June 28th. Oklafan wished him a speedy recovery.

Oklafan extends condolences to Chris Taylor [2nd] on the passing of his mother on June 27th.

Oklafan extends condolences to the family and friends of Sika, who passed away June 25, 2024 at the age of 79. At the time of this writing, a cause of death has not been announced. Sika, whose full name was Leati Sika Amituana'i Anoa'i, was one of 13 siblings born in American Samoa. He moved to California at age 14 and joined the US Merchant Marines before deciding to join his brother Afa in the professional wrestling ranks. Debuting in 1973 alongside his brother Afa, The Wild Samoans, as they were known, would create a path of destruction everywhere they went. And along the way, they acquired a pantheon of tag team titles. They made their first foray into the WWF in 1980, winning the WWF World Tag Team Titles twice that year. Sika would also challenge WWF World Champion Bob Backlund for his title, though he was unsuccessful in that venture. After leaving the WWF, they came to MSW, where they defeated MSW Mid-South Tag Team Champions Ernie Ladd & Leroy Brown for the titles on November 30, 1980. They held the belts for 2 months, losing them to The Junkyard Dog & Karl Kox, then left for a tour of Japan. Returning from Japan, they aligned with Ernie Ladd as their manager and won the MSW Mid-South Tag Team Titles from The Junkyard Dog & Dick Murdoch on May 31, 1981. This title reign was only a month long before they lost the belts back to Murdoch & JYD. After betraying Ladd and aligning themselves with Skandar Akbar, the Samoans would have one more MSW Mid-South Tag Team Title reign, winning the belts on New Year’s Eve 1981 from The Junkyard Dog & Mike George. This title reign would prove to be longest as they maintained control of the titles until March 5, 1982 before losing them to JYD & Mr. Olympia. They left MSW in May, 1982, went to Georgia Championship Wrestling and beat The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael Hayes & Terry Gordy) for the NWA National Tag Team Titles, but would vacate those to return to the WWF in 1983. The won their third and final WWF World Tag Team Titles from The Strongbow Brothers (Jay Strongbow & Jules Strongbow) and would hold them for 8 months before losing them to The Soul Patrol (Rocky Johnson & Tony Atlas). Again, Sika would also challenge for the WWF World Title, now held by Hulk Hogan. In one of the oddest points of their career, they turned face and feuded with The North-South Connection (Adrian Adonis & Dick Murdoch) for most of 1984 before leaving the WWF again at the end of the year. After Afa retired, Sika returned to the WWF in 1986 as a singles star, managed by Curtis Iaukea. He stayed until 1988, leaving after WrestleMania IV, where he competed in a Battle Royal. He never made as big of an impact as a singles star as he did in tag team competition. He briefly formed a tag team with his nephew Kokina Maximus (aka Yokozuna), but turned his attention to opening The Wild Samoan Training Center in Minneola, FL. Alongside his brother Afa, they were inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2007. Today, Sika is perhaps best known as the father of 2 WWF stars, the late Rosey and Roman Reigns. Sika's final WWE appearance was at the 2020 “Hell In A Cell” pay-per-view to celebrate Reigns' victory there. Sadly, many records from the late 1970s are sparse and at the time of this writing, only 4 documented matches in Oklahoma involving Sika are known. The earliest was April 18, 1982 where Sika & Afa lost to Mr. Olympia & The Junkyard Dog in a Lights Out Match at an MSW event in Tulsa. The last was May 16, 1982 where The Wild Samoans teamed with The Grappler and lost to Dick Murdoch, Mr. Olympia, and The Junkyard Dog at an MSW event in Oklahoma City.

On his most recent podcast, Rikishi’s remembered and paid tribute to his uncle, the late Sika. To listen to the podcast, click here.

WWE paid tribute to Sika Anoa’i following his passing on Tuesday: “WWE is saddened to learn that Sika Anoa’i, a WWE Hall of Famer, one-half of The Wild Samoans tag team and father of Roman Reigns, has passed away. WWE extends its condolences to Anoa’i’s family, friends and fans.”

The wrestling world used social media to remember WWE Hall of Famer Sika, who passed away Tuesday at age 79. WWE paid tribute to Sika during last week's episode of “NXT”. "WWE is saddened to learn that Sika Anoa’i, a WWE Hall of Famer, one-half of The Wild Samoans tag team and father of Roman Reigns, has passed away," the company wrote in a post on X. "WWE extends its condolences to Anoa’i’s family, friends and fans." AEW wrote, "AEW and the wrestling world mourn the passing of the legendary Wild Samoan Sika. Our thoughts are with his family, his friends and his fans." TNA Wrestling also sent its condolences to the family, adding, "TNA is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of legendary Samoan wrestler Sika Anoa?i. We offer our sincerest condolences to his friends and family." Rikishi, Sika's nephew, wrote that the first thing that comes to mind when he thinks of his uncle is mentor. He was also his first trusted adviser, confidant, and someone who always spoke his mind. "As a professional, he showed me all of the ropes, (literally) and guided me on 'roadlife,' and being one of the boys," Rikishi wrote. "But more importantly, as my Uncle, he taught me to slow down, take my time, and truly ENJOY life. We both loved living in Pensacola and appreciated the slower pace of life." Sika's niece, Vale Anoa'i, wrote that her uncle was her dad's (Afa) closest brother, best friend, tag team partner, and soulmate. "There was no bond like theirs. Uncle Sika loved the family and Samoan culture more than anything. This loss is agonizing for all of us, but especially for my Dad. Please keep him in your prayers," she wrote. Others that paid tribute to Sika on social media included Natalya, Taz, Adam Pearce, Bully Ray, and The Cauliflower Alley Club.

A graphic honoring Sika was shown during “NXT” on Tuesday night. “Earlier today we learned of the passing of Sika Anoa’i,” Vic Joseph said on commentary. “And from the isle of Samoa, to the WWE Hall of Fame, he’ll always have a seat at the table.”
