EC3: The Stigma Around Control Your Narrative Damaged My Career

Control Your Narrative, and the stigma around the promotion damaged the career of EC3 according to the CYN co-founder.

Following his release from WWE in 2020 which came after a doomed main-roster run, EC3 would host his own 'Free the Narrative' pay-per-views and would speak at length about wanting to control his own narrative. In February 2022, EC3 and Adam 'Braun Strowman' Scherr announced Control Your Narrative, a new promotion taking inspiration from the film 'Fight Club.'

Damaging A Career

The announcement of CYN was met with ridicule by some fans, who poked fun at the overly serious nature of the promotion as well as the idea of talent booking their own storylines. CYN's 'rules' also drew derision from fans, such as the ban on superkicks and that the fight isn't with your opponent, but with yourself.

With the promotion off to a shaky start, CYN quickly gathered a stigma among fans as something of a punching bag that wouldn't last long. When asked by Jason Powell’s Pro Wrestling Boom podcast as to whether this stigma affected EC3, the current NWA star was confident it had.

"Yes [the stigma damaged my career.] Because people that know me and know me very well were so afraid of the political climate... They also don’t want to take residual backlash on something that’s not true and completely made up. That hurts and that strains relationships."


EC3 added that the stigma against his promotion was massive, despite him doing nothing other than offer an alternative to conventional wrestling tropes.

"I don’t need to try to do anything [to change the stigma.] I’ve done nothing wrong. I apologized for nothing, I’ve done nothing wrong."

The Future of Control Your Narrative

In September 2022, Scherr made his return to WWE, raising questions as to the future of CYN. Shortly after, EC3 announced plans for a CYN tour had been canceled, and the company has not hosted an event since. Last December, Strowman claimed that he still owns Control Your Narrative.

For EC3, he has since joined the NWA and will challenge for the NWA World's Heavyweight Championship at the upcoming NWA 75 event. Should Tyrus lose, not only will he no longer be champion, but the FOX News host has vowed to retire.
