NEWS
Ricky Starks made a cameo appearance at WWE's "Royal Rumble 2023", appearing in a leaked backstage photo with Cody Rhodes. The leaked photo caused a stir online and led to some jokes behind Starks and Swerve Strickland on a live edition of the "Swerve City" podcast on the Chris Jericho cruise. "What y'all do care about is where I go in my off time and what other pay-per-views I show up at. Leave me alone. You gotta have real friends. Support real friends. The picture is great. It's so good. I look so jacked, like I'm about to rob a bank. The First 48, that's what it was. The picture here is three suspects that we found in connection to a murder back in June of last year. If you have any information about these three, please let us know,'" Starks said while he and Swerve laughed. Starks then switched to a slightly more serious tone and said, "I'm in the process of maybe, maybe suing Alamodome and getting some money out of it because, how are you a security guard and go, 'You know what I got? Rewind the tape. Let me show you right quick.'" It is unknown if Starks will take any action against the Alamodome.

Wrestling legend Jake Roberts has shared his honest thoughts on Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson), comparing them to WWE’s Bloodline (Roman Reigns, Jey Uso, Jimmy Uso, & Solo Sikoa). Kenny Omega vs Roman Reigns has been a debate that has existed online for years, with both stars among the most decorated of their respected companies. With The Elite’s recent AEW Trios Championship reign and Reigns and The Usos’ ongoing Bloodline saga, the debate has extended to include both stars’ factions. Speaking on the "Cafe du Rene" podcast, Jake Roberts noted that he prefers Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks to Roman Reigns and The Usos, but admitted that he’s not the biggest fan of The Young Bucks’ work. Comparing the two top teams, Roberts said "(Which trio is better, Omega and The Young Bucks or Roman Reigns and The Usos?) Oh, Kenny. Kenny and The Bucks without a doubt. I think Kenny Omega is f**king unbelievable. He is f**king on spot. I don’t like a lot of stuff The Young Bucks do but brother they’re doing it and getting away with it.”

Despite his successful career in WWE, Paul Wight (AKA The Big Show) was often made a joke due to Vince McMahon turning him into a heel or babyface at the most random of times with no logical reasoning behind it. This was very apparent during his storyline with The Authority back in 2013. The Attitude Era of the WWE was known for its shocking moments, and the debut of The Big Show at the "St. Valentine’s Day Massacre" pay-per-view in 1999 was no exception. Fans were naturally shocked to see such a behemoth making his debut back then. While speaking on the "Grilling JR" podcast, Jim Ross talked about The Big Show’s run in WWE. J. R. stated that he believes WWE overexposed The Big Show in a big way. Ross believed that The Big Show was an attraction, much like Andre the Giant, and should have been kept special and unique to maintain his appeal. ”Well, I thought at the end of the day, over the years, that we didn’t do a great job of managing Big Show’s career. I thought we overexposed him, bottom line. He was an attraction. He was our Andre, that was the intended direction to go in. But I didn’t think we did an overall start to finish great job and how we utilized Big Show. I just, too much, we didn’t keep him special, we didn’t keep him unique, and I thought that was a big mistake at the end of the day. So, but it’s a calculated risk, and also says to a pay-per-view consumer, you never know what’s going to happen. They had a surprise, they have Big Show come out there. Well, we didn’t know he was even going to be there. So that’s kind of the theory behind that is that when you watch a WWE pay-per-view, you just really never know what’s going to happen, who’s going to show up. That was the theory behind Big Show debuting that night. And it was a good out for Steve [Austin] to win the match without climbing over the top of the cage with those bad knees and all that stuff. So I thought that was a decent finish actually.” Wight is currently working in AEW, and he couldn’t be happier there, as it truly feels like home for him.

It has been officially announced that The Great Muta will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame by Ric Flair.

Rhea Ripley, Maximum Male Models, and Ric Flair made appearances on WWE’s "The Bump" on Wednesday afternoon.

Finn Balor posted a tweet asking Mick Foley for advice ahead of facing Edge in a Hell in a Cell match at "WrestleMania". Foley responded “Hello Finn, This is Mick! Remember, you are asking a guy who has never actually won one of these. Probably best to study every single thing I did in my #HIAC matches…and then do the exact opposite. When in doubt, use the abs.”

Bianca Belair has made history as the longest-reigning Black champion in WWE’s history. She has held the RAW Women’s Championship since last year’s "WrestleMania 38", breaking the previous record, held by MVP, who was United States Champion for 343 days.

Mickie James learned that the money is in the moments. Throughout her 20-year career, Mickie James has been involved in a number of moments that have stuck with fans. Recently, she created another viral moment when she bit Masha Slamovich’s tongue during their Knockouts World Championship Match at Impact Wrestling's "No Surrender". During a recent interview with Denise Salcedo, James discussed what she’s learned about creating moments. “I think that’s why I love wrestling. To me, it’s not about the moves. The moves don’t make money, the moves don’t draw people into the story. They just make people go, ‘Ooh, that’s cool,’ and that because that doesn’t have an emotional connection to it,” James said. “So when I look at the stories and creating these memorable moments of moments you can go back to—and this is where early Alexis Laree, I used to be, ‘Oh, I gotta have this great match, and I gotta execute all these moves perfectly.'” James explained that she would try and do all these flashy things in her early matches, only to return to the back and not receive the praise she thought it would. “That’s all been the art for me is to create moments and to create unique moments with that opponent and with that story you’re trying to tell within that. When you’re wrestling such different performers, and I think that was another test to me, were we going to go out there and have a Mickie James match, or if I’m really, truly testing myself, I want to have the Masha match. I want to see what she has and insert myself in there where I feel like it makes sense. “And mind you, Masha had been playing mind games and that’s how she went. She’s been successful and pretty much dominated because of her mental strength and the mind games. Mind games are something I love. I love mind games because that’s the test of a true champion because your mind can get in the way of everything if you let it. So that was kind of ‘bite back,’ if you will, to some of the mind games that she had been playing with me. It was different, it was there. It made sense to me.” James recalled how she’s been known to do “the kiss,” something she’s infamously pulled out in high-profile matches against Trish Stratus and Chelsea Green. But in her match at "No Surrender", she wanted to create a different moment seeing as though Slamovich is a different type of competitor. Ultimately, James bit Slamovich’s tongue to throw her off her game while also providing fans with a moment that they will always remember.

The death of Bud Grant, the legendary coach of the NFL's Minnesota Vikings and CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers, at age 95, is notable in wrestling as Grant and Verne Gagne were social friends. Grant also appeared at Gagne's first retirement show in 1981 in Minneapolis, MN. Grant, Gagne, and Leo Nomellini were teammates on the University of Minnesota football team and were all stellar multi-sport stars. Gagne was a football star and two-time NCAA Champion in wrestling as well as one of the biggest pro wrestling stars and most notable promoters in history. Nomellini starred in football, wrestling and track (shot, discus, and 4x100 relay) and was a Hall of Famer in the NFL and a legit Hall of Fame candidate as a pro wrestler. Grant starred in football, baseball, and basketball. Grant actually played two seasons of professional basketball and was part of the Minnesota Lakers NBA Championship team with the legendary George Mikan. He was a star wide receiver with the Philadelphia Eagles after switching to football, and was later a star with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. After his career ended he coached the Bombers to four CFL titles and coached the Vikings to four Super Bowls, although they lost all four. He is in both the CFL and NFL Halls of Fame.

Brandon Rechsteiner, son of Scott Steiner, has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Virginia Tech University. Brandon is currently a 6' 1" 185 lbs. senior point guard for Etowah High School in Woodstock, GA.

El Gallardo recently sprained his ankle. Oklafan wishes him a speedy recovery.

Devion Black broke his hand on March 17th. Oklafan wishes him a speedy recovery.

Oklafan extends condolences to Barrett Brown on the passing of both his grandfather and his aunt Jeanne this past week.

Oklafan extends condolences to the family and friends of Jeff Gaylord, who passed away after a brief lllness on March 15, 2023. He was 64 years old. Gaylord initially made his mark in sports on the football field as a 4th round draft pick of the Los Angeles Rams, but was cut during training camp. He would go on to play briefly for the CFL's Toronto Argonauts before making his way to the USFL, playing for the Boston Breakers. When the Breakers moved to New Orleans, he went along. He was traded to the San Antonio Gunslingers before the Breakers moved to Portland, OR. He recorded 10 sacks in his 3 year USFL career. During his time in the USFL, many of his personal demons began to manifest themselves. By his own admission, he used a multitude of steroids and steroid knockoffs. He also began using copious amounts of cocaine. In one of the more bizarre stories from that time, he was bouncing at a nightclub and when one of the male strippers did not show up, he took a can of green paint, painted his body and filled in, billed as "The Incredible Hulk". He would be arrested that night and fined $50 for indecent exposure. A knee injury would end his football career, but his impressive physique led him to be recruited into the world of pro wrestling. Gaylord would debut in October 1985 after being trained by Tom Jones and Scott Casey and competed in San Antonio and Kansas City before making his way to the UWF. He spent 9 months in the territory but was never more than a mid-card performer, gaining victories over the likes of The Libyan, Gustavo Mendoza, and The Angel of Death, but losing to many of the more prominent members of the roster. Gaylord then made his way to Texas, initially competing in WWW as The New Spoiler. He then made his way to WCCW in January 1988 where he initially competed as The Hood. After 2 months, Gaylord dropped The Hood persona and competed as himself. While working his way up the WCCW ladder, he also made an appearance in WWF, tagging with Tim Horner and losing The Fabulous Rougeaus (Raymond Rougeau & Jacques Rougeau, Jr.). Gaylord's success in the area was much the same as in the UWF, even after WCCW transformed into the USWA. But after over 2 & 1/2 months, Gaylord finally captured gold, tagging with Jeff Jarrett and defeating Brian Lee & Chuck Casey (subbing for Don Harris) for the USWA World Tag Team titles. This reign only lasted 1 week as they would lose them back to Lee and Harris on September 10, 1990. But one week later, Jarrett & Gaylord would regain the titles from Harris & Lee. This reign would only last 1 day when again, Lee & Harris would regain the belts on September 18, 1990. Gaylord would leave the USWA in May 1991 and go to the GWF where he seemed to have more success, but he was only there for 2 months before going back to the USWA. While in the GWF, Gaylord began to gain a poor reputation as he beat up Eddie Gilbert in the locker room, allegedly in a hit put out by a rival promoter. Sadly, the success he had in GWF didn't follow him, though he did compete in a couple of matches against Jerry Lawler in the WWF. He would reform his tag team with Jeff Jarrett and challenge unsuccessfully for the USWA World Tag Team Titles, winning against champions Simply Devine (Rex King & Steve Doll) by DQ on multiple occasions. By mid-1993, Gaylord seemed to have turned the corner, logging more wins than losses. He also formed a tag team with Mike Anthony and pursued the USWA World Tag Team Titles again. On November 24, 1993, Gaylord had perhaps his highest profile match as he was one of Shawn Michaels' Knights (The Black Knight) in Michaels' Survivor Series Match against The Hart Family (Bret Hart, Bruce Hart, Keith Hart, & Owen Hart). Five days later, Gaylord and Anthony would defeat PG-13 (J. C. Ice & Wolfie D) for the USWA World Tag Team Titles in a Titles-vs-Hair Match. But once again, the reign was short as on December 6, 1993, they lost the belts to The War Machines (War Machine #1 & War Machine #2). It was Gaylord's final title reign. Aside from one dark match in WCW in 1994, Gaylord would continue to compete in USWA until the middle of May 1995. He has one more documented match in Texas All Pro Wrestling where he teamed with Steven Dane to defeat Tim Horner & Sam Houston on August 22, 1998. After that, Gaylord's life seemed to take a drastic downward turn. In 2001, he robbed the same bank in Aurora, CO 4 months apart, taking $5000, and spent 6 & 1/2 months in jail after pleading guilty. In 2009, he was back to bank robbery in Colorado, charged again with robbing 2 banks. This resulted in a 6-year stint in prison, seeing him released in 2015. At the time of his death, his brother said that he had been doing outreach work, providing clothing to the homeless in Denver, CO. At the time of this writing, Gaylord appeared on 10 documented Oklahoma wrestling cards. The earliest was May 25, 1986 in Tulsa where he teamed with Ken Massey & Perry Jackson and lost to Ivan Koloff, Nikita Koloff, & Korstia Korchenko. The last was December 7, 1986 in Tulsa where he teamed with Brett Sawyer and lost to Devastation, Inc. members UWF Tag Team Champion Bill Irwin & UWF Champion The One Man Gang.
