Romero Sets Stampede Record; Earns Title Shot Against Jackson
Posted: Dec 1st 2007 By: CMBurnham
The Oklahoma Stampede has always been the stepping stone to greatness in Northeast wrestling federations. And last year, current FCW Tag Team Champion Romero Contreras tied Brent Albright at 2 wins each, the most any wrestler had won. But with a shot at ComPro Champion Anthony Jackson on the line, Romero wasted no time in plowing through the competition this past Sunday to gain his victory and prepare to take down his most hated opponent.
As had been the custom for the past few weeks, Romero was targeted on Saturday by Jackson's Hall of Famers, Rico Suave & the Greatest Bolo. After Romero had picked up a hard fought victory over Pork Chop, the Hall of Famers made yet another sneak attack, trying to double team a physically worn down Franchise. But Romero disposed of them with little effort, although he was obviously upset at suffering another sneak attack after his Dark Match.
When it came time for the Oklahoma Stampede match on Sunday, the Hall of Famers put what they felt was a sure-fire plan into action. With Anthony Jackson stationed at ringside, FCW Champion the Canadian Red Devil and Rico Suave started the match. 30 seconds later, the Greatest Bolo entered, bringing his ever present Kendo stick to the ring. Due to the lack of rules in this match, it was completely legal for Jackson to use the Kendo stick on the Devil, allowing him to be eliminated. And Jackson repeated this tactic against Blake Albright, El Super Colibri & Michael York as they entered the ring area. Fans grew more and more disgusted as it seemed that Jackson was going to handpick his opponenet and winner of this match.
But then, ComPro Tag Team Champions Sudden Impact entered the match together and met the Hall of Famers on even terms. And 30 seconds later, Romero entered and threw everyone out. A brief respite for Romero was followed by the surprise of Boss Campbell entering as a competitor. But Romero was soon joined by his opponent in the dark match at the beginning of the show, Jesus Rodriguez. Romero even allowed Jesus to dispose of Campbell since Romero had defeated Jesus earlier. As the 2 celebrated, then the biggest shock of the night came as Ray Martinez entered dressed to compete in the Oklahoma Stampede. Known primarlily in this region a a ring announcer, Martinez had left TPW 2 years ago and had made the rounds in Oklahoma. But upon his return, it was clearly obvious that he was not the same mild-mannered Ray that most Tulsa fans remembered. Ray took the microphone and expressed some of the most vile racist filth ever heard in a wrestling ring, accusing Romero of pandering to the white man and telling Rodriguez that Romero had been "Whitewashed". Apparently, this worked for Ray, as Jesus quickly turned on his former teacher and began pummeling him as Ray helped.
Tim Rockwell, the Candian Luchadore, Pork Chop and Shane Morbid all entered the match after this and then it was simply a matter of waiting for the inevitable. Eventually, it came down to Romero and Morbid. Morbid, freshest since he had earned the right to enter last due to a victory over El Super Colibri the previous night, made the best of his situation and tried to power a weakened and worn down Romero over the top. But Romero used his experience in these types of matches to catch Morbid offguard and pulled down the top rope, allowing Morbid's own momentum to catapult him over and gain Romero his 3rd Oklahoma Stampede victory.
Although Romero set an Oklahoma record with this win, that was not the primary thing on his mind, as he had now earned a guaranteed shot at Anthony Jackson for the ComPro Title. It seems only likely that Romero will continue to have to fight off the Hall of Famers, but when he gets Jackson in the ring, "All Action" had best be ready to rely on himself and only himself. So far, Romero has made it through 2007 undefeated and he certainly does not want Jackson to lay credit for the one blemish on that record.
