Corporal Punishment and Urn Stokes both appeared as security members in the Bobby Lashley/Brock Lesnar segment at the opening of WWE “RAW” broadcast in Oklahoma City Monday.
WWE Raw from Oklahoma City did another impressive number Monday night against the NFL, averaging 1.80 million viewers overall and drawing a 0.50 rating in 18-49. Raw got a break when the New York Yankees vs. Cleveland Guardians final game of the series was postponed due to rain. The Denver Broncos vs. Los Angeles Chargers NFL game did 12.05 million viewers and a 3.75 in 18-49, which was lower than the Monday Night Football games had been doing. Raw had a very strong first hour, and declined throughout the show with a very substantial third-hour drop for an episode anchored by Seth Rollins vs. Matt Riddle for the United States title. The show finished fifth on cable, behind the NFL game, the kickoff show, the postgame show, and SportsCenter after the game. The game only aired on ESPN, with no ESPN2 simulcast nor a network feed. Raw was down only one percent in viewers from last week, which was considered an exceptional number and had the advantage of coming after a PPV. It was down nine percent in 18-49 and down 14 percent in 18-34. Raw also beat ABC programming including Bachelor in Paradise head-to-head, beat CBS after 8:30 p.m., beat NBC in the third hour, and beat Fox in the second hour. Really, aside from the NFL and The Voice, Raw did the most impressive numbers of anything on television Monday night. Raw was sixth on cable in women 18-49 (behind the four NFL shows and Love and Hip Hop Atlanta), sixth in men 18-49, fifth in 18-34, fifth in women 12-34, and sixth in men 12-34. It was 14th in total viewers for the day, behind NFL-related shows and news programming. As compared to one year ago, Raw was up 13 percent in viewers, up 28 percent in 18-49, and up 45 percent in 18-34. Last year's show went against both the baseball playoffs and the NFL. There were substantial third-hour drops from hour one with women 18-49 dropping 21 percent, men 18-49 dropping 18 percent, women 12-34 dropping 26 percent, men 12-34 dropping 27 percent, and people over 50 dropping 14 percent. The three hours were:
8 p.m. 1.94 million viewers
9 p.m. 1.85 million viewers
10 p.m. 1.62 million viewers
Sammy Guevara has been hired to do the broadcast of the Global Titans Fight Series show in Dubai on November 13th. The event is where Floyd Mayweather is fighting Deji in the main event and Bobby Fish makes his boxing debut.
Bret Hart recently took part in a K&S WrestleFest autograph signing, mentioning Kurt Angle, Rey Mysterio, and Brock Lesnar as people he would have liked to face in the ring. Regarding Lesnar, Hart said “I would have loved to work with Brock Lesnar just because I always heard he was a good pro in the ring. The opposite of Goldberg.”
Koko B. Ware has launched a new website.
Trevor Murdoch is siding with Billy Corgan regarding why NWA Empowerrr 2 didn’t take place earlier this year.Current NWA World Heavyweight Champion Trevor Murdoch recently sat down with Steve Fall of NBC Sports Boston to discuss a wide variety of subjects. When asked about Billy Corgan’s reasoning for not having an NWA Empowerrr 2 due to a lack of overall talent available to bring in, Murdoch agreed with him. “I think we’ll see that event again. It was successful. And it was a great event. I actually looked back. I was at a table, and I watched the whole show from start to finish, and I thought that ladies did a great job,” Trevor Murdoch said. “Also, with that being said, I agree with Billy in the aspect of we tend to become fans of people. And when we become fans of those people, we tend to put horse blinders on. “We don’t see everything sometimes in the most clear light. And at the time when we were putting the show together for The Chase [NWA 74 weekend], there wasn’t — I’m gonna get heat for this too, but shit, I’ll say it. At the time. We couldn’t find enough TV-quality talent when it came to the ladies to produce a full pay-per-view and for it to be as successful or as popular as the last one. “We also didn’t want to go out and just throw a shit product together and say, just because we did one, we’re going to do another one. So we’re going to rush together, we’re going to find whatever we can and then disparage or ruin the reputation of the first Empowerrr. Does that make sense? It’s those WrestleManias that you watch sometimes that I know it’s WrestleMania, but Jesus Christ, they just kind of threw their shit together. “It’s important for Billy and the NWA to put out the best quality product. So there’s nothing the matter. We’re not burying any of the ladies that are out there. We just at the time couldn’t find enough women to put together a show that held the same quality as last year.” When it was brought up that Empowerrr used multiple women that were contracted to other promotions at the time, Murdoch said that politics in wrestling are the worst and wished that everyone would come together to help create an awesome product. “Politics have been the worst when it comes to pro wrestling,” Trevor Murdoch admitted. “Like if we would all just chill out a little bit. And everybody kind of worked together because we’re all doing the same shit. It’s just different, different styles of it. You know what I mean? “Man, how awesome of a product could we put together maybe once a year, if we can just put some of those differences behind us and just put on some amazing wrestling. And that’s the one good thing about Billy with NWA; he’s open to all of that. He’s open for discussion with any company. Not only to benefit just them, but it has to also benefit us too, though.” While it wasn’t a full pay-per-view event, the NWA did host an Empowerrr-themed event in 2022. The company promoted the July 29, 2022 episode of its weekly series as an “Empowerrred Edition”, although it still featured a men’s match on the card.
Former TNA Knockouts Champion ODB was recently a guest on the Two Man Power Trip Of Wrestling podcast to promote her new autobiography. During her conversation with John Poz, ODB revealed that Al Snow told her to lean into the “One Dirty Bitch” character during her time in OVW. “I was really passionate about my character, and I was so different. And then there were times where I didn’t really give a rat’s ass. I just wanted to test things like if I get in trouble for grabbing my boobs for so long. It’s just little stuff like that where I got a little slap on the wrist here and there, but it all turned out good.” When asked about if it was her idea to use a flask, ODB said, “Yeah, I was doing the whole beer gimmick, but that’s Stone Cold’s thing. Then I didn’t even tell TNA what I was doing, and I remember James Storm was there, so I couldn’t do the beer thing because that was his gimmick. I didn’t want to piss anyone off. So I had a flask, and I was like, ‘Hmm. I not even gonna tell anyone what I’m doing.’ So I had it in my back pocket, and then I walked out with it, and they’re like, ‘Hey, it works. Keep doing it.’ So I took a chance, and not many wrestlers do that because people are always afraid to get in trouble. I got in trouble here and there, and I really didn’t care. I stayed true to myself.” Poz asked ODB about the process of leaving OVW and joining TNA, which involved career-altering advice from Triple H. “Jerry and Jeff Jarrett, when they first started TNA, they know of me. They got the women’s division rocking in 2007, and that’s when they decided, ‘Alright, we gotta pick our girls.’ Gail Kim and Traci Brooks were already there, but they weren’t wrestling really much and they were valeting. Then they were like, ‘Let’s do a women’s division. Let’s get this going.’ So those two, I was very close with them, and then Terry Taylor reached out to me. I was at OVW—I was actually the women’s champion—and Terry called me. He was like, ‘We’d love to have you be a Knockout. We’re gonna send you over a contract.'” “That week, Triple H was actually at OVW. He watched me perform, and I was so nervous to like go up and talk to him. So I go up and talk to him, introduce myself, and he’s like, ‘I love the character’. He’s like, ‘Damn, too bad you weren’t in the DX days’, you know? And he’s like, ‘I love it’. But unfortunately, The top guys are not like — and obviously Vince did not like [me] or my character and [Triple H] was like, ‘Take that opportunity you have for TNA. I think that’d be very good for your career’. So thanks, Triple H. He could have said, ‘Oh no, stay here, kid. See what works.’ But, nope. He said, ‘Go, go. Do it.'”
On the latest edition of his To Be The Man podcast the legendary Ric Flair spoke about a potential matchup between Bianca Belair and Charlotte Flair at WrestleMania, a showdown the Nature Boy believes would be just as big as Steve Austin vs. The Rock. Check out Flair’s full thoughts on the subject in the highlights below. Thinks a Bianca Belair vs. Charlotte Flair WrestleMania match would be just as big as The Rock vs. Steve Austin: “I have no inclination as to whether or not this will happen, but I think if Ashley [Charlotte Flair] wrestles Bianca Belair at WrestleMania, it’ll be as big as Austin and Rock if they build it right. They are the two best athletes ever, that I’ve seen in my career, to ever be in the same women’s division.” Says there are other great workers in WWE but no one has the athletic ability that Charlotte and Belair do: “There are some other great workers, but for pure athletic ability, Bianca Belair and Ashley stand out. They could be the two best athletes in the company. I’m not kidding. Both are legitimate Division 1 athletes with credentials.”
The latest guest on Busted Open Radio was Greg Gagne, son of legendary promoter Verne Gagne, who shared the story of when Hulk Hogan quit the AWA and how Verne thought the Immortal One was just playing a prank on him. Highlights from the interview are below. Recalls his father Verne receiving a letter from Hulk Hogan saying he was going to quit, but Verne thought it was a rib: “Verne got a letter on December 21 from Tampa, Florida. It said, ‘I’m not coming back. Signed Hulk Hogan.’ Verne saw it, and he said, ‘Tampa, Florida, that damn Eddie Graham.’ Eddie and him used to play ribs on each other all the time. So Verne thought it was a rib, and he threw it away.” How they reached out to Hogan during a show and found out that quitting was real: “So Christmas night comes, St Paul’s sold out. Hogan doesn’t show up. I called him on the phone, I said, ‘Hey, big man, what are you doing? We’ve got matches down here.’ He says, ‘I’m gonna go with the WWE.’”
Bret Hart has once again made negative comments about Goldberg, and this time he has called on WWE to outright remove Goldberg from the WWE Hall of Fame. Speaking during a recent K&S WrestleFest signing, the former WWE Champion stated: “I always thought that if Goldberg got into the Hall of Fame then Horowitz should’ve gone into the Hall of Fame. Horowitz can actually wrestle. Goldberg never could. I think he got in there for hurting everybody he worked with. They should take Goldberg out”. The issues between Hart and Goldberg began in 1999, after Goldberg delivered a stiff kick to Hart at the Starrcade PPV, resulting in Hart receiving a serious concussion. Hart continued to wrestle after the incident, but Hart cites this specific spot for causing the end of his legendary career.
Fans of wrestling in the 1990s will no doubt remember the legendary feud between The Undertaker and Mick Foley's Mankind character. The rivalry brought us classic moments such as Foley being thrown off the cell in the second major Hell in a Cell match, as well as the very first Buried Alive match. In the latest episode of "Foley is Pod," Foley shared his thoughts on the Buried Alive match, as well as some aspects of pop culture that he feels were strongly influenced by it. "I'm gonna go on the record and say, without that match, there is no Dale Doback-Brennan Huff 'Buried Alive' reference in 'Step Brothers' at all," Foley said. Foley is referencing the popular 2008 comedy starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly – specifically the scene in which the two titular step brothers duke it out, as Ferrell's Huff tries to bury Reilly's Doback alive in the backyard after hitting him in the head with a shovel. The scene even features Ferrell's character faking unconsciousness before sitting up and attacking his step brother, perhaps an overt reference to The Undertaker. Foley would go on to win the match after almost being buried himself, though Undertaker would reach out and break his hand through the dirt after the match was over, letting both the audience and Foley himself know that they still had unfinished business. There have been five Buried Alive matches since that night in October 1996, with the most recent being The Undertaker's retirement match against AJ Styles at WWE WrestleMania 36. Though the match was known as a "Boneyard" match, it was, for all intents and purposes, a cinematic "Buried Alive" match.
Bill Goldberg's WWE contract is coming to an end soon, according to the man himself. During a recent interview with the "RomanAtwoodPodcast," the WWE Hall of Famer revealed how much time he has left on his current deal while recalling a story about an interaction he had with Stephanie McMahon. According to Goldberg, his relationship with WWE has never been "a hundred percent on the up and up" due to the fact he played he was a pivotal part of the company's main competition, WCW, during the "Monday Night Wars." Afterward, he revealed the length of his contract while getting sidetracked. "I can't remember what the point of this story was, but I've been hitting the head way too many times, quite obviously, as you can see in real-time......Stephanie [McMahon], if you're listening to this, my contract ends in two months, so don't hold this against me." Goldberg continued talking about McMahon after revealing the details of his current contract, stating that she asked him to stop headbutting doors when he joined WWE. "I put my head through a lot of things across the country from 94-97, and I guarantee you half of them are still there," he added. While Goldberg's contract might be on the verge of expiring, the 55-year-old seems open to extending his deal. Earlier this year, he teased another match in WWE following his loss to Roman Reigns at Elimination Chamber in Saudi Arabia. The Hall of Famer also discussed his intention to step back into the ring during a recent appearance on "WWE's The Bump," claiming that he owes Reigns a "receipt."
Jerry Lawler was among the 27 new inductees into the Memphis Sports Hall of Fame.
