Some pro wrestlers can forgive a botch or two, but when it ends someone’s career, that changes the story entirely. One such time that this has occurred is when a botched superkick from Goldberg led to the retirement of Bret Hart shortly there after due to concussion related injuries. Speaking to Lucha Libre Online, Bret revealed he is still angry regarding the incident. He said “I think, for me, it’s always been a bit of a sore spot; it always makes me kind of mad that some guy is flying all the way over to Saudi Arabia and making 3 million dollars in a match and the same guy is the guy that kicked me in the head and never thought about me or what he cost me and my family and what he did to me.” Of course, when an injury occurs of this magnitude it is remembered by many fans. The wrestling world was changed forever once that superkick landed.
WWE sent out a survey to members of their mailing list today regarding feedback for the first season of "WWE Evil". The survey asks for interest in names such as Roddy Piper, Bobby Heenan, Paul Heyman, Mr. McMahon, Jake Roberts, J. B. L., and "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase as potential subjects for a second season.
Jim Cornette gave his thoughts on various topics including Jade Cargill on "The Jim Cornette Experience". Cornette believes the TBS Champion is the best champion in AEW. “Ok who are the champions, Let’s see. 'Hangman' Adam Page, I’m sorry, and I’ve met this guy in ROH 10 years ago when he was starting out. And I have mentioned before what great potential he had. That ought to be an omnibus one day, going from he’s got a ton of potential to oh sh*t, he hasn’t gotten any better, doesn’t have a ton of personality and they made him the World Champion, and he ain’t ready for it. But he ranks as the worst major promotion World Champion in history, not because of his work, but because of his aura, personality, and the build to get him there. The fact that there’s 5 or 6 guys are more over than he is and he is the World Champion. How low can we go? It’s a failure." Co-host Brian Last then asked if Jade Cargill is a better champion. Cornette said "Well she is undefeated, she is dominant, she looks great. She is still green but she is acting like a World Champion. The Tag Team Champions are the 4th or 5h best in the company, FTR is obviously better, even The Hardly Boyz are more over. [Sammy Guevara] I mean Sammy is a better worker than Jade, but is he a better champion? Thunder Rosa is the Women’s Champion, but since Jade is the one on the roster with the big push, the big record, and the constant television time, Jade Cargill as the TBS Champion is more important than the Women’s Champion Thunder Rosa. So yeah, the best AEW Champion is Jade Cargill.”
Jim Cornette recently shared his honest thoughts about The Varsity Blonds-House of Black segment from last week's episode of "AEW Dynamite". The Malakai Black led stable interrupted a promo by Brian Pillman, Jr., who had Griff Garrison and Julia Hart on his side. Black attempted to lure Hart to his faction's side by handing her a chair to attack Garrison. However, she stepped back at the last moment, leading to an angry Malakai Black tearing her eye patch. The segment was far from well-received by fans, as the story involving House of Black and Varsity Blonds started months ago before being forgotten, only to be kickstarted yet again. Speaking on his podcast "The Jim Cornette Experience", the wrestling veteran blasted the segment, saying that it was the worst segment he has ever seen in the history of the business. He added that Brian Pillman, Jr. did his best to inject life into his promo but failed due to weak material and "rotten" creative. "This was the worst segment I have ever seen on wrestling television because there was no redeeming value to this. This material was so horrible that nobody cared. Anybody who came up with this story should be sent away to prison. There's no punishment too heinous. Nobody should have been forced to watch this. You send the kid [Brian Pillman, Jr] to tell this story, which is hokey b****t. He tried so hard that he ended up screaming and squeaking, trying to put his soul into it for the rotten creative," said Cornette. Even in the past, the former WWE manager has expressed his disdain for the Malakai Black led stable in All Elite Wrestling. Just last week, Cornette stated that House of Black functioned under darkness because they didn't want people to get a close look at them and realize that they "suck." Jim Cornette added that the stable was trying to sell a "sub-standard product" under the garb of subdued lighting. "Maybe this is why they're constantly in the dark, because they know that it sucks and they don't want people to get a good close look at it so that's why they're always in the dark. Let's cover that s**t up, don't... Here you're trying to sell this sub-standard product, control the lighting, subdued lighting," said Cornette. Considering that the Death Triangle came to the rescue of Varsity Blonds on Dynamite, it'll be interesting to see how this story pans out in the coming weeks.
In another anti-AEW tirade, Jim Cornette lashed out at AEW for underutilizing Bryan Danielson, who has recently allied himself with Jon Moxley since their grueling encounter at the "Revolution 2022" pay-per-view. William Regal, who has been a mentor to the two men, became instrumental in creating what they later named The Blackpool Combat Club. A few weeks later, the stable inducted 25-year-old Wheeler Yuta. On last week's episode of "AEW Dynamite", the three-man group continued their winning momentum when they defeated The Butcher, The Blade, & Angelico in a trios match. Although the BCC is quickly becoming one of the hottest factions in pro wrestling, Cornette isn't a fan of the group's booking. Speaking on the latest episode of "The Jim Cornette Experience" podcast, he described last week's match as a repetition of the same old story. Cornette also expressed his desire to see Danielson back in the singles competition: "They might as well just run last week's tape because it's the same thing. (...) Every week it's the same f***ing match, and they end up stomping the shit out of all the opponents and winning the match." And I'd just love to see Danielson in a singles match and in an interview again, so I could enjoy something instead of always having that f***ing plumber latched on to him like a goddamn leech," Cornette said. He then went on to state that AEW missed out on an opportunity to crown Danielson World Champion late last year: "I'm pissed off. They had the best world champion in all of professional wrestling ready to go in December, Bryan Danielson, and they f***ing shot themselves in the foot." In late 2021 and early 2022, Danielson received two consecutive shots at the reigning AEW World Champion Hangman Page. The two men put on back-to-back barn burners at the "Winter is Coming" and TBS premieres of "Dynamite" respectively. Danielson failed to dethrone Adam Page on both occasions. The Blackpool Combat Club can be a stable in the levels of Bullet Club, nWo, or DX, they only need good storylines that makes sense for new members and entertaining. Jim Cornette has often been critical of Jon Moxley, and the fact that the latter is now working with Bryan Danielson has made him furious. Not too long ago, the former manager asserted that Moxley was the worst thing that has happened in Danielson's AEW career: "Letting Moxley out of the puzzle factory was the worst thing that happened to Bryan Danielson. When he was there all by himself, he was stealing the show. And now, if he would, he would still be petty theft," said Cornette. Danielsion last wrestled in a singles match on the April 6th episode of "Rampage", where he defeated Trent Beretta. Since then, he has been involved in four straight trios matches, winning all of them.
On yet another episode of "The Jim Cornette Experience", Cornette blamed Darby Allin for dragging Sting down. He said ”Darby did a promo about the match, and in that monotone, boring voice, where he sounds like a hypnosis victim. He said it was going to be a real special night, and then Sting reinforced that for 10 seconds he didn’t haul. He didn’t beat his chest. He did not say it is showtime. He has now adopted Darby Allin’s promo style, which is act like you are just talking in your sleep and say nothing. So now, instead of Sting bringing Darby up, Darby is bringing Sting down. Does Allin talk like this in real life? And if he does, can anybody hear him? And why would anybody listen to him?”
Jeff Hardy defeated Darby Allin in a crazy main event on last night’s show to advance to the semifinals in the Owen Hart Memorial tournament. The Nature Boy Ric Flair took to Twitter to congratulate Hardy, calling him his biggest fan. He writes, “@JEFFHARDYBRAND, You Have EXCEEDED ALL GOALS And Have Made Me Your Biggest Fan Ever! WOOOOO! #AEWDynamite.”
Ric Flair talked about a wide range of topics during the latest episode of the "To Be The Man" podcast. During it, Flair spoke highly of Randy Orton and his own daughter, Charlotte, as he named them the best wrestlers in the world right now. “Randy just celebrated his 20th anniversary. I was there the day he started. Randy is just getting going. Barring an injury, Randy will be the best wrestler in the business for a long time. Until those two decide to go home, they will be the best in the business. With the shape she is in, the condition she’s in, and the athletic ability at a higher level than I’ve ever seen it, until she wants to walk away. She gets better every day. That’s unheard of.”
Ethan Page's final edition of his "Fake Name, No Gimmicks" vlog aired on May 11th.
Jim Ross recently talked about a wide range of topics on his "Grilling JR" podcast. During it, he recalled his battle with cancer last year. Ross first underwent surgery in November to fight skin cancer. He was on hiatus from AEW while he did radiation treatment and returned on the December 29th broadcast of "Dynamite". “I’m loving life. I’m very blessed and I’m healthy. I took my 22nd radiation treatment in the morning here in Jacksonville. All the treatments were in Jacksonville. That night we had our show at Daily’s Place. I had made it a personal challenge from J.R. to J.R. that I’m going to get that last treatment, I’m going to come home and shower, I’m getting my fat ass to work, and I was on the air that night. I knew that it was going to take a certain amount of health and healing and good luck for all of that to work together. That’s how much I love the business. I came back 30 days early because I didn’t want to miss anymore. My opportunities for AEW and Tony Khan, with all the guys there, I’m very blessed to have this situation in my lap, and as long as I can still do my work and not embarrass myself, as long as I can deliver, why not? What else am I going to do? This is my life. All I’m doing is living my life and I’m loving every damn minute of it. I really appreciate everybody’s support and patience with me over time. Sometimes I’m a little cranky, but you have to understand that I’m never pain free anymore. That’s what is challenging.”
Jim Ross has said that Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts’ health is “not good” which is why he’s not appeared on TV lately. Roberts is the on-screen manager of Lance Archer but has spent more time away lately due to his health issues. During his "Grilling JR" podcast, Ross talked about the health of “The Snake”: “I just saw him here a few weeks ago and he’s still battling his breathing issues. He’s not in great health. That’s why you don’t see him as often on AEW television as he once was when he was fronting Lance Archer. But his health is not good and he’s taking the means to address it. He still has surgeries left. But he has breathing issues.” Speaking about his own health, JR said: “I really appreciate everybody’s support and patience with me over time. Sometimes I’m a little cranky, but you have to understand that I’m never pain free anymore. That’s what is challenging. My opportunities for AEW and Tony Khan, with all the guys there, I’m very blessed to have this situation in my lap, and as long as I can still do my work and not embarrass myself, as long as I can deliver, why not? What else am I going to do? This is my life. All I’m doing is living my life and I’m loving every damn minute of it.”
Jake Roberts has bizarrely revealed that he’s still haunted by the sight of one former rival and his erect nipples. While in Georgia Championship Wrestling in 1983, Jake Roberts found himself locked in an increasingly violent rivalry with Ron Garvin. In the feud which last into 1984, the pair went to war over the NWA World Television Championship in every kind of violent street fight that you can imagine. Speaking during an appearance on "Busted Open Radio" , Roberts fondly recalled his rivalry with Garvin. However, he also admitted that he remains baffled to this very day over the fact that Garvin’s nipples would get hard just before he made his comeback. Something that apparently not even the man himself could explain. “That was a damn fight, I’ve been in street fights where I would have given up a long time ago with Ronnie because he would light me up. I’ll tell you something weird that would happen with Ronnie, I used to be beating the snot out of him and I’d look down and think, ‘He’s not getting back up.’ I’d pound him a couple more times and I’d look and I was waiting for him to get up and make the comeback. I know he’s going to do it sooner or later because he’s a real man. You might think you have Ronnie Garvin whipped, but you don’t. He had a tell, like in poker. He had a tell on him when he was about to get up and make his comeback. You know what the tell was? His nipples would get hard. It’s true. It bugged me for years. I saw him at a con a couple years ago and I was like, ‘Ronnie, please, you have to answer me one question.’ ‘What do you want to know?’ ‘Why did your nipples get hard before you beat the shit out of me?’ He just looked at me, laughed, and walked off. So, I still don’t know. Sometimes, I wake up in the middle of the night and I’m thinking about Ronnie Garvin and it scares me. Why in the hell did your nipples get hard? I don’t know if I want to know the answer.” Following his rivalry with Garvin, Jake Roberts signed with World Class Championship Wrestling before moving to the WWF in 1986.
