NEWS
Wrestling fans have been hearing a lot of talk about female representation lately. Becky Lynch has commented on that very topic and how she thinks AEW is lacking. Another key WWE employee recently talked about the subject, and he thinks WWE is doing a great job both on and off camera. Bruce Prichard has long been one of Vince McMahon’s right-hand-men in WWE. Prichard also hosts the popular "Something to Wrestle With" podcast where he discusses his thoughts on the business. On his latest episode, Bruce was asked about the representation of women on the WWE writing team. Prichard said he believes that since the writing team expanded in the early 2000s, WWE has done a great job of putting women in creative positions. The company has also focused on women’s competition in the ring. The writing team, he notes, has had a lot of women on it for decades. “We have a lot of female representation on the writing team now and have since, God, early 2000s… It became a thing when the writing team expanded.” WWE has been quick to point out the progress they’ve made with women in the company over the years. While many have been critical of AEW’s representation, WWE employees often point to their success in bringing women’s wrestling to Saudi Arabia as a key example. Prichard says things are the same way behind the camera. The days of females as sex objects in WWE are hopefully long in the past. The company is trying to move forward while building a positive amount of representation for women. Bruce Prichard is proud to have seen that growth from the company.
Jake Roberts has sensationally claimed that he once told Vince McMahon to fire Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels, adding that The Kliq almost killed the entire industry. Throughout 1996 and 1997, Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels were at war both inside and outside of the ring. At the time both men shared very different views on wrestling and were remarkably different personalities. The feud which occasionally spilled over into physical violence backstage, finally came to a head at "Survivor Series" in 1997 with the infamous Montreal Screwjob. Desperate not to let Bret Hart head to WCW with the WWF Championship, Vince McMahon concocted a plan which saw Michaels win the title, despite Hart never submitting while trapped in the Sharpshooter. The real-life tension between Hart and Michaels and McMahon simmered for another decade, before they eventually made peace. One man who had a front row seat to all of the chaos was Jake Roberts, who had returned to the company in 1996 and worked behind the scenes as well as wrestling, until being released in early 1997. Speaking during an appearance on the "Talk is Jericho" podcast, with Chris Jericho, Roberts revealed that he told McMahon to fire both Hart and Michaels as they had become too much trouble. “I used to have to sit when we were writing television when Shawn and Bret were throwing their pissy fights against each other. We would be trying to write television, and Vince would get on the phone for three hours with those two cats. Trying to get them to wrestle each other,” he said. “I said, ‘Vince, what are you doing? Fire the motherf**kers, man, tell them to hit the f**king road.’” Roberts added that when he re-signed with WWF in 1996, McMahon asked him to cast his eye over the locker room, and report back any issues. Roberts said it was simple, The Kilq had too much power. “When he brought me back in ‘96 he told me, ‘Jake, look around and see where you think the problem is.’ I said, ‘it’s real simple, man, the inmates are running the asylum, The Kliq.’ The Kliq nearly killed the business,” he said. “Everybody says how great they were, well let me tell you something, they drove it to the ground, whatever.” Shawn Michaels remained with WWE until "WrestleMania XIV" in March 1998 where he retired following a serious back injury. Although he made sporadic appearances over the coming years, Michaels didn’t return to the ring until the summer of 2002. Bret Hart wouldn’t appear with WWE again until 2006 when he was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Matches added to WWE’s YouTube page on Wednesday include A. J. Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura from "Backlash 2018".
Ric Flair talked about "WCW Clash of Champions" in 1988 where he dropped the NWA World Heavyweight Championship to Sting during the first episode of the "To Be The Man" podcast. On his thoughts on Sting at the time, he said “I thought it was new and fresh. He had that look that very few guys have ever had,” Flair said. “I mean, the paint, very charismatic, and really athletic. It was just one of those things that worked out. I don’t think I’ve ever met a nicer guy. Some guys are just really too nice for this business and he and Ricky Steamboat were two of them. I mean, just really nice guys. Sting to this day remains one of the most humble, nicest people I’ve ever met,” he continued. He then talked about wanting to drop the title to Sting instead of Lex Luger. He said “Because I promised Sting in Corpus Christi. I said ‘I’ll wait for you to get back (Sting was injured at "Clash of Champions X").’ It was never about Lex. I promised Sting and Jim Herd was such an a*shole. It was nothing against Lex Luger at all. It was strictly a contract thing. So people are going to have different versions of different stories. I know the story. I was with it, and apparently I was right because they fired Herd and I was gone.”
Mickie James began co-hosting "Busted Open Radio" every Wednesday as of May 4th.
Mickie James made an appearance on "Throwing Down with Renee & Miesha" to discuss a wide range of topics. During her appearanc, James spoke about losing her confidence at the end of her second run with WWE before being released. “Now I’m sitting in a different seat and more in my own power of trying to figure out what works for me and what I want to do. I lost my confidence. It’s surprising for me to say that, but I feel like towards the end (of WWE), I had a lack of confidence in myself and who I was as a performer, almost like I forgot all this other cool stuff I did and how much it meant to a lot of people. To be able to go away, even the way that I did, and then do all of this stuff, it’s been wild. I’ve had some of my best matches of my career. Honestly, I wasn’t even considering whether I wanted to wrestle after I left. It was more about raising the awareness for women’s wrestling. Everything else was kind of icing on the cake.”

"Dark Side of the Ring" was a breath of fresh air when it hit the television screens. It introduced many casual viewers to some of the most controversial and notorious incidents in pro wrestling history. It was previously reported that Vice has not picked up the docu-series for a fourth season. Season 3 of Dark Side of the Ring capped off with an episode on WWE’s high-profile steroid trials from the nineties. It is is unknown if the show will ever be picked up for a new season, especially in the wake of the polarizing reaction the last season got from viewers. Whatever the case may be, there are people who want to see another season and Missy Hyatt is one of them. She recently took to Twitter to share an interesting pitch for Dark Side of the Ring showrunners. Missy proposed for the creators to do an episode on the closure of the United States Wrestling Association. “How about for @DarkSideOfRing Jerry Lawler selling uswa and convinced the buyer that is was worth millions. even had vince McMahon vouch for lawler. Within weeks, the new owner was making pennies. he tried suing lawler & the judge told jerry to settle. But jerry got a not guilty.”Longtime wrestling fans might be familiar with the origins of the USWA and for being the home of WWE Hall of Famer Jerry Lawler, who won countless championships during his time with the promotion.
Vice did not renew "Dark Side of the Ring" for a fourth season and the producers of the show will look to start other pro wrestling projects, per Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer. Meltzer went into detail of the problems that were caused on the “Plane Ride From Hell” episode which proved to be the downfall of the show. He said “Because they were relying on memories of people from 20 years ago and there were multiple flights back from Europe where guys were drunk and out of control, but the famous one didn’t have Vince McMahon or Linda McMahon on the flight, although people on that flight told them that they were. There were also complaints from Rob Van Dam, [Tommy] Dreamer and [Jim] Ross about how they were depicted on that episode claiming to have been taken out of context. Ross had questioned appearing on the show going forward publicly.”
The Springfield Lucky Horseshoes, a collegiate summer league baseball team co-owned by Jeff Jarrett owns part of, has announced Jerry Lawler appearing at their June 23rd game and Kevin Nash at their July 8th game. They are asking fans to come dressed as their favorite wrestler.
